There are more stories pertaining to our gun rights in Ohio then we can possibly draw attention to with individual daily commentary. But they are all worthy of mention.
What follows is our review of headlines from around the state though a pro-gun rights lens.
From a school being locked down to an armed citizen being honored, these articles should be a part of your required reading!
What follows is several days of headlines accompanied by short, concise pro-gun analysis.
Nearly half of the more than 100,000 concealed handgun licensees (CHLs) in Ohio are up for renewal in 2008, and questions on the renewal process or reports about renewal applicants’ experiences in various counties continue to come in to Buckeye Firearms Association.
One of the more frequently asked questions deals with whether or not a person can carry on their license during the 30-day grace period that is provided for a person to apply for a renewal even after the expiration date on the license.
Some reports have come in of sheriffs saying that a person can carry, others have had their sheriff say that they may not.
To residents of southwest Ohio, the name Goodman is synonymous with some of the best gun shows in the state.
But Buckeye Firearms Association has long been familiar with the fact that the men involved in Bill Goodman’s Gun & Knife Shows are also pro-gun activists who stay intimately involved with the daily battle to protect and defend our Constitutional right to bear arms.
Dave Goodman took the time to email a local restaurant about a newly-posted “no-guns” sign, and the following correspondence from the 17-store Donato’s Pizza chain proves it was time well spent.
Me to gun owners who vote for either one: You’re just stupid.

On Wednesday, April 16, gun control and anti self defense organizations are planning a series of protests around the nation to commemorate the one year anniversary of the mass murders at Virginia Tech. Remember? This was a likely preventable tragedy, had university administrators not openly scoffed at the common-sense proposal to permit students, faculty and staff the means to defend themselves.
Instead, a man opened fire on students in two locations, killing more than 30. The students never had a chance because campus administrators around this nation live in fear of their own shadows. Campuses where open thought and discussion are allegedly encouraged are shut down, and reasonable proposals and debate to enable students to protect themselves are dismissed out of hand with no comprehension of the unintended consequences.
Sadly, Virginia Tech administrators, students, staff, professors and families learned all about unintended consequences.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported last week that the newspaper’s metro columnist Regina Brett was one of three finalists for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Commentary. After the death of a teen-aged armed robber who attacked a concealed handgun license (CHL)-holder, and in response to community outrage insanely focused against the robber’s victim for protecting himself, Brett wrote a series of columns that explored inner-city violence, poverty and hopelessness among black teenagers and young men.
On May 8, 2007, I wrote a response to Brett’s second column, and titled it “It’s time for another Plain Dealer Pulitzer: Self-defense commentary continues“. I am pleased to hear that Brett’s excellent writing was indeed nominated for this journalistic prize.
The House Criminal Justice Committee, chaired by Rep. John White (R-38), will hear proponent testimony on Rep. Bruce Goodwin’s HB450, legislation that would restore gun rights to members of the armed services…

On Wednesday, April 9, the Senate Judiciary Committee on Criminal Justice held a 5th hearing for Senate Bill 184, the Castle Doctrine bill.
Amendments to the bill were adopted via a Substitute Bill, which can be downloaded via a link below.
Sub SB184 offers a revised and more descript language to Castle Doctrine compared to the language originally introduced. The bill spells out that the criminal must be engaged in a felony act against a victim at the time a victim defends themselves. Examples included rape, murder, kidnapping and felonious assault, among a few other violent acts.
The bill will also extend the “no duty to retreat” language to the victim’s vehicle.
Castle Doctrine will shift the burden of proof to the prosecutor instead of the victim in proving whether it was clearly an act of self defense.
(Columbus, Ohio) – You are invited to join the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance at the 2008 Candidates Reception on April 15.
The event provides an opportunity for the Ohio sportsmen’s community to meet with state and federal legislative candidates, rub elbows and voice their concerns.
The reception will be April 15 at the Athletic Club of Columbus from 5:30 to 7:30 PM and all are welcome to attend. The Athletic Club is located at 136 E. Broad St. in downtown Columbus.
Legislative candidates will use the informal atmosphere as an opportunity meet the opinion leaders from Ohio’s many prominent statewide sportsmen’s organizations, while listening to the opinions and fielding questions of their sportsman constituents.
The event is being sponsored and co-hosted by the Ohio Republican Party and the Ohio Democratic Party. Leaders from both parties will address those in attendance, and are encouraging their candidates to make the event a priority.
