Op-Ed: Gun Debate Is Hardly Over
By John R. Lott, Jr.
The Supreme Court may have confirmed that Americans have the right to own guns for protection, but the gun debate is hardly over.
The District of Columbia, whose handgun ban was struck down by the Supreme Court, is still planning on banning most handguns.
And the court decision has spurred the media into overdrive to paint guns as dangerous to their owners.
No one who has taken even a quick glance at the crime data can seriously argue that the D.C. gun ban lowered murder or violent crime rates.
The concerns being raised are not the threat from criminals, but that guns pose a risk to their owners.
What SB184 means to you: Part VI – Government building victim zones
By Jim Irvine
SB184 is 75 pages. It will go into effect on September 09, 2008. This is part of a series of articles looking at specific sections of the bill and how it will affect you. Keep in mind that I am not an attorney and this does not constitute legal advice. Concealed carry license holders are required to read the Attorney General guide. I highly recommend “The Ohio Guide to Firearms Laws” by Ken Hanson, Esq. (NOW AVAILABLE: Update for SB184).
Of all the places concealed handgun licensees (CHL’s) are banned from carrying a gun, the ban in all government facilities may be the most problematic. While not “fixed” in SB184, it is now workable for CHL’s.
BOOK: An Introduction to Security Emergency Planning for Faith Based Organizations
Recently, Buckeye Firearms Association Vice Chairman Chad Baus wrote about the “Security for Faith-Based Organizations Seminar” that is being offered at greater Cincinnati’s Creation Museum. Baus recently had the chance to attend the seminar, and his complete review of the seminar will soon be published by USCCA’s Concealed Carry Magazine.
In response to requests from faith-based organizations around the country (many of whom are located at distances that do not easily allow for sending a delegation to the seminar), Answers in Genesis has published a guidebook to help these organizations take the first steps towards assessing risk and establishing security and emergency plans, which are critical to reducing liability and keeping those who come in to worship safe, as well as those who travel around the world on mission trips.
What SB184 means to you: Part V – School Safety Zones
By Jim Irvine
SB184 is 75 pages. It will go into effect on September 09, 2008. This is part of a series of articles looking at specific sections of the bill and how it will affect you. Keep in mind that I am not an attorney and this does not constitute legal advice. Concealed carry license holders are required to read the Attorney General guide. We documented the problem with School Safety zones in our “white paper” which stated:
Ohio’s statute is completely out of step with the Federal statute. In Ohio, there is no way to have an unloaded firearm in a locked case in a school zone. Additionally, Ohio has an absurdly drafted “exception” for concealed carry license holders set forth at R.C. § 2923.122(D)(3), just like the Federal statute, even explicitly incorporating the Federal exception into the Ohio exception.
Unfortunately, the Ohio “exception” can never apply, trapping gun owners every day.
While SB184 stopped far short of “fixing” the problems with school zones, it did address the issue and it is now possible to pick up and drop off children at school.
D.C. v. Heller: It’s not about Guns, It’s About Self-Governance, Safer Streets
By John Longenecker
There is no such thing as a sensible gun law, and gun bans are a fake-out fraud and abuse of power. Unwind Gun Bans and you begin to unwind other abuses so adverse to Family and Liberty.
The Second Amendment to our Constitution was made absolute for several reasons. In fact, the Second Amendment wasn’t even written for citizens.
I get a predictable reaction from talk radio hosts when I say this, but follow-up clears it all up. Gun control is a European concept totally inappropriate for the Founders who escaped that kind of thinking at the nation’s inception.
Let’s call it for what it is: Gun Bans are a fraud of window dressing and control. Gun bans are a fake-out and abuse of power backed by official Force, and the Supreme Court just struck down a fake-out and abuse of power.
D.C. v. Heller’s Alan Gura at the Cleveland City Club
By Jim Irvine
On July 7, 2008 the City Club and the Cleveland Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society hosted a luncheon forum on gun possession. Alan Gura, who represented Dick Anthony Heller in his successful case against the District of Columbia (DC gun ban case) was the guest speaker.
Buckeye Firearms Foundation sponsored a table. In attendance were State Representative Tom Patton (R-Strongsville) Don Myers, Terry Gallagher, Executive Director, Ohio Patrolman’s Benevolent Association, and Buckeye volunteers Hank Olden, Ron Lisy, Chris Chumita and Jim Irvine.
Gura discussed the history of why they chose D.C. and why they chose to go forward at this time.
A study in contrasts

Hunting with Pia: BFA’s Larry Moore takes FX’s ’30-Days’ afield
By Larry S. Moore

The FX reality show ’30-Days’ recently aired a segment entitled “Gun Nation”. The show was filmed in Ohio. It featured a Pia Lalli, a Brockton, MA gun control activist and Ken Ekermeyer, of Leesburg in rural Highland County, who is a gun enthusiast. In addition to the gun activities of shooting and working in a gun store, Lalli went hunting while in Ohio. I was contacted by the producer and agreed to take her hunting. My daughter, Tiffany Atley, and I took her squirrel hunting just after Labor Day 2007.
In case the reader did not see the show, Lalli had a friend, who also happened to be her therapist, killed by a deranged man with a gun. After that she became a gun control advocate. She also embraces a vegetarian lifestyle and is anti-hunting as well. I don’t care who wants to be a vegetarian so long as they don’t attempt to take my freedom of choice to hunt. Lalli might be described as the stereotypical east coast liberal with a sense that the government should take care of the citizens. She has consistently voted for Ted Kennedy. On the other hand, I might be described as a conservative with the ideals that the government should stay out of my life. The words ‘gun nut’ and ‘hunting freak’ have been used by some to describe me. Fair enough. She is a hip-hop dance instructor. I am country or bluegrass music and definitely cannot dance. So the stage was set for one unique day in the woods.
