Something for non-gun owner voters to understand about candidates’ views on guns and a new ticket…a real new ticket.

The subject came up in the Democrat Convention, 2008.

The Democrat view of banning guns will never touch crime, because it focuses on the iron and not the behavior of criminals. It profoundly ties the hands of victims to respond, and this results in scarring injuries numbering in the millions each year. Please visit www.FBI.gov for precise figures on crimes by type, by type of weapon used, and, of course, numbers of gun-related deaths.

At the Democrat Convention, and in the discussion of automatic weapons, Senator Patrick Kennedy remarked that 30,000 people die from gun violence.

Mr. Kennedy, America does not see 30,000 gun deaths every year, much less by fully automatic weapons. America sees about 10,177 total gun deaths in 2006 and every year on the average over the last decade and largely – here it comes, wait for it – crime-on-crime shootings. These are not shootings from lawful gun owners, such as your constituents, they are shootings in Crime.

As we inch towards another anniversary of the September 11 attacks and the cowardly attack on Beslan School Number 1 in Russia, we have to wonder what the world has learned in the intervening years. In America, partisan bickering continues over the future in Iraq, and in Russia borders skirmishes continue over disputed provinces of the Republic of Georgia.

Hollywood has deemed enough time has passed since the attacks on the Twin Towers to start making movies about the tragedy. As usual, the Hollywood elite condemn America for actions they believe caused the attack, and then exploit the situation to make their money.

The question remains, however, about whether the world is any safer today than it was then. Make your own judgment on whether America as a whole is safer since that answer is beyond the reach of most of us.

A judgment you can make is whether you have done things to make your loved ones safer.

SB184, Ohio’s Castle Doctrine law, takes effect

CAUTION: Erroneous media reports on Castle Doctrine implementation

The bill Gov. Ted Strickland calls “common-sense legislation”, establishes Castle Doctrine in Ohio and clears up ambiguous sections of Ohio's concealed carry law goes into effect September 9, 2008.

Castle Doctrine is arguably the most important part of SB184. Indeed, this was the entire bill when it was introduced. As stand alone legislation it passed the Ohio Senate with a unanimous 32-0 vote. Even if every other improvement were stripped from this bill, this alone would have been a significant piece of legislation.

The McCain-Palin ticket: A good choice for gun owners

This has been a most unusual political year for me–unusual in that I was having trouble working up real enthusiasm for the Republican nominee after the primary season, as I thrive on politics. But I had little joy this time.

I will confess John McCain was not my first pick, nor even my second or third choice, in the primary process. His record on guns has not been good enough for my tastes. Hence my lackluster desire to get too involved. His often reaching across the aisle also made me somewhat suspicious. I did not care for his status as a Maverick bucking conservative trends.

The words from an essay circulating on the Internet best expressed how I felt about Senator McCain: “Senator John McCain could never convince me to vote for him. Only Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama can cause me to vote for McCain.”

Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign just won’t let the gun issue rest. Mr. Obama and his campaign surrogates continue to assure gun owners that he is on their side, and it appears to be paying off. John McCain only leads Mr. Obama among hunters by 14 percentage points, just about half the 27-point lead that President Bush held over John Kerry in 2004. If Mr. McCain had a similar lead, he would be ahead in most polls, particularly in many battle ground states.

Yet, despite all the Democratic claims to the contrary, Mr. Obama is undoubtedly the most anti-gun candidate ever nominated by a major party for president.

A couple of weeks ago, Brian Schweitzer, Montana Democratic governor, told national reporters that Mr. Obama “Ain’t ever going to take your gun away.” An Obama adviser, Stanford Law Professor Larry Lessig, said recently on Hugh Hewitt’s national radio show that “I think that he has always been an individual rights person on the Second Amendment.” Another advisor, Professor Cass Sunstein at Harvard, told Time Magazine in June: “Obama has always expressed a belief that the Second Amendment guarantees a private right to bear arms.” The list goes on.

…So, has Mr. Obama consistently supported individuals’ rights to own guns and opposed the D.C. handgun ban?

McCain taps pro-gun/ pro-hunting Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as running mate

According to Politico.com, a top aide to Senator John McCain says Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has been chosen by the Arizona senator as his running mate.

As a child, Palin reportedly used to rise at 3 a.m. with her father to go moose hunting before school. Today she is the married mother of five who enjoys hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.

Oh, and her favorite meal is moose stew.
