After Years of Stonewalling, New Orleans Mayor Admits Illegal Gun Confiscation, Settles with NRA

Fairfax, VA – After a three-year legal battle over the unconstitutional confiscation of lawfully owned firearms, the City of New Orleans has agreed to settle a law suit by the National Rifle Association (NRA). A permanent injunction has been issued against the city, Mayor Ray Nagin and current Police Chief Warren Riley. The Second Amendment Foundation assisted NRA in the legal battle against Mayor Ray Nagin and the City of New Orleans.

“Today’s outcome is an important victory for the citizens of New Orleans and the Second Amendment,” said Wayne LaPierre, NRA’s executive vice president. “We fought for three long years in a fundamental legal challenge to assert the inherent self-defense rights for law-abiding citizens, knowing the Constitution would prevail. Today it has prevailed and freedom has won.”

Ohio Gets Proactive in Addressing School Shooters

Readers of this website know I have written frequently (see here and here and here) on the subject of School Shooters. To me, it has always been a simple equation:

1.) You will never prevent school shootings,
2.) School shooters are on a one way trip and desire martyrdom, and
3.) The most effective response to a school shooter will come from the folks being shot at.

While I am still a proponent of these views, I am pleased to report that Ohio is being very proactive in addressing the police response part of the equation.

Obama campaign unlawfully misuses proprietary firearms industry media list

NEWTOWN, Conn. – The Obama campaign in Indiana, on September 27, unlawfully obtained and made unauthorized use of a proprietary media list belonging to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) – the trade association for the firearms industry. Sen. Obama used this list to e-mail a press release concerning National Hunting and Fishing Day.

On October 8, NSSF sent a “cease and desist” letter to the Obama campaign demanding that they immediately stop any further unauthorized misuse of its proprietary media list.

The list contains the names and addresses of members of the media that attended the NSSF Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show) – the world’s largest firearms trade show and the 23rd largest trade show of any kind in North America.

The list can only be obtained from NSSF and its use is tightly controlled by NSSF. Neither the Obama campaign, nor its operations in Indiana, obtained any rights from NSSF to use the list.

NRA endorses John McCain and Sarah Palin for President and Vice-President

The Associated Press is reporting that the National Rifle Association’s Political Victory Fund PAC is endorsing Republican presidential nominee John McCain and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for Vice President.

Buckeye Firearms Association Northeast Ohio Chair Rick Kaleda attended the Pittsburg, PA rally Thursday morning where this announcement was first made.

According to the AP, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said that despite differences with McCain on gun show rules and campaign finance restrictions, the two agree on many more issues important to the group. LaPierre is quoted by FOXNews as saying that the NRA would “be foolish to overlook the vast areas of agreement” it has with John McCain.

“He’s cast more than 60 votes in the Senate in support of the Second Amendment,” LaPierre said.

LaPierre also explained to the media that McCain’s selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was “a tremendous asset to the ticket.”

President of Obama’s fake gun group admits partisan origins at poorly-attended rally

The president of faux gun group American Hunters and Shooters Association (AHSA), Ray Schoenke, appeared in Coshocton Tuesday before what is described by the Zanesville Times-Recorder as a “strong showing by the United Mine Workers Association”.

In fact, the newspaper reveals only about “a dozen people listened to him speak,” turnout which does an excellent job of demonstrating the lack of support former Joyce Foundation board member Obama is receiving from Ohio gun owners.

The poorly-attended rally did offer something to gun owners, however.

On its website, right after listing several organizational “values” that would make the anti-gun Brady Campaign proud, AHSA claims to be “a non-partisan organization that advocates and advances sensible public policies.” (emphasis added)

But on this, his second trip to Ohio to campaign for Barack Obama, Schoenke admitted the organization is anything BUT non-partisan.

Growing Gun Problems For Obama, Dems

Supporters of Barack Obama’s attempt to rewrite the history of his anti-gun record say voters need not worry about losing their gun rights, thanks to the great victory Second Amendment advocates enjoyed in District of Columbia v. Heller.

Leaving aside for a moment questions over why Obama, who now claims to agree with the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision, spoke in favor of the D.C. gun ban before the ruling, and why he refused to sign the amicus brief signed by Sen. John McCain and 54 more of his colleagues in the Senate (as well as by Vice President Dick Cheney and 250 House members) a huge question still remains.

What is the future of Heller after the expected three appointments the next President will get to make for the U.S. Supreme Court?

Senator McCain Addresses Ohio Sportsmen (Full Transcript)

A record crowd of 1300 sportsmen converged on Columbus, Ohio for the annual U.S. Sportsmen Alliance’s 12th Annual “Save Our Heritage Rally” on September 27. In addition to the opportunity to win new firearms or perhaps that dream hunting or fishing trip (or 20 acres of hunting ground!), many also came to hear Senator John McCain, the Republican Presidential candidate. The Senator was scheduled to deliver the keynote address, however the Wall Street financial crisis caused the Senator to suspend his campaign to return to Washington D.C.

At the request of Mike Budzik, who is heading the Ohio Sportsmen for McCain effort, I traveled to Columbus early to meet with him; former Senator Mike DeWine who is heading the Ohio campaign for McCain; Aaron Hobbs, the McCain Campaign national sportsman coalition leader, along with other leading sportsmen. A number of various conservation, sportsmen and gun groups provided input to the campaign leadership, including Buckeye Firearms Association and the leadership of the Ohio Gun Collectors Association. Later in the evening, Buckeye Firearms Association Vice Chair Chad Baus spoke extensively with Hobbs and Andy Swanson, Director of Coalitions for McCain Campaign in Ohio and PA.
