On January 15-18, Buckeye Firearms Association Central Ohio volunteer Clint Lake attended the 2009 SHOT Show in Orlando, FL. Following is Part 1 of a blog on his experience.

Greetings from the 2009 Shot Show in balmy Orlando, Florida! The good news is that it is warmer than in Ohio. I’m going to change the format this year for my blog and cover only the newest of firearms in these categories: Mouse Pistols, Non-Mouse Pistols, Rifles and conceal carry accessories. Today I will be covering Mouse Pistols.

Probably the biggest buzz of the Shot Show this year was around the smallest pistols. I believe this is because there is a large segment of gun owners who are women and their ranks are growing by the month. Being an NRA instructor I continually see the unfortunate tradeoff women take between concealability, stopping power, and difficulty of trigger pull. With these factors in mind, and the fact that it is, by nature, a more challenging task for women who are new ‘conceal carriers’ to hide a pistol ‘on person’, the major manufacturers have developed some really quality pocket pistols.

$30,000 in College Scholarships Available to Students

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA- The National Rifle Association is currently accepting applications from qualified high school sophomores and juniors to participate in the National Youth Education Summit (YES) from July 6-12, 2009.

40 outstanding students from across the United States are chosen each year to travel to the nation’s capital, where they participate in the weeklong, educational opportunity. The summit encourages young adults to become active and knowledgeable U.S. citizens by learning about the Constitution, Bill of Rights, the federal government, and the importance of being active in civic affairs.

Day 1: President Obama officially declares war on your guns!

Within minutes of being sworn in yesterday, Obama posted a new White House website announcing the administration’s declaration of war on American gun owners.

Tucked away in the section on “Urban Policy,” under the header “Crime and Law Enforcement,” the White House website now states:

Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.

They’ve been hiding for years, but Washington’s gun ban extremists are baaaack

Like cockroaches waiting for the lights to go out before scurrying out into the open, the anti-gunners have sulked in their little holes, feeding off political scraps while we were increasing the pro-gun footprint. While the anti-gunners hid, pro-gunners were so successful that only two states don’t allow legal concealed carry. The anti-gun leadership absorbed their losses and waited a long time for the pendulum to swing back in their favor.

Now that the Democrats control Congress, they see it as the cue to scurry from their hiding places. Their plan is to take away private ownership of guns in America.

First Shot from the 111th Congress

The 111th Congress got off to a predictable start on January 6 with the swearing in of the many new members and the introduction of a few pieces of legislation, including one of the most draconian gun control bills to be offered in years.

No sooner were the new members of Congress sworn in than Representative Bobby Rush (D-IL), a former Black Panther leader, filed a bill, H.R. 45, which he calls the “Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009”. The bill was introduced with no cosponsors and was automatically referred to the House Judiciary Committee where, under normal circumstances, it would remain and where it would die, but the new congressional paradigm is far from normal and anything could happen.

On Saturday, January 10, I was honored to be a guest speaker for a meeting of the Medina County Friends and Neighbors (www.mcfan.org). The topic was firearms – and despite heavy snow, icy roads and winter storm warnings, the group had a very healthy turnout.

I started by having my 3 year-old son join me for a safety discussion. I asked him what he would do if he found a gun.

A guest editorial from the Columbus Dispatch titled “Kowtowing to the NRA” accuses Ohio lawmakers of caving in to pressure from the NRA to not pass a proposal to raise the fee for obtaining a concealed carry permit by almost 22 percent.

In doing so, the editorial says the lawmakers have “failed to put the best interest of the taxpayers first.” I strongly disagree.

In March 2008, a Gallup poll found that an overwhelming majority of the United States public—73%—believes that the Second Amendment guarantees the right of Americans to own firearms. Yet, to hear the Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence (formerly Handgun Control Inc.) tell it, America voted overwhelmingly in support of gun control just a few months later.

Consider the following from a Brady bunch report published just hours after the polls closed last November, and entitled “Guns and the 2008 Elections – Common Sense Gun Laws Won, the NRA Lost, & What it Means.”:
