I’ve been a hunter my entire life, or at least since about age 10. I started participating in trap shooting when I was about 16 years old. While I hunt every year as much as possible, my trap shooting activities have experienced peaks and valleys.
The peak of my trapshooting was from about 1990 through 2005. I believe the first Grand American Trap Shoot was held in Sparta, Illinois in 2006. Since that time, my interest trapshooting has declined. I was active in protecting gun rights and promoting gun ownership long before I became involved in the concealed carry movement in Ohio.
(Columbus) – The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) will host a legislative reception for the members of Ohio’s Congressional Delegations and General Assembly with state sportsman leaders on March 10, 2009. The event is part of the organization’s annual effort to connect Ohio’s sportsmen’s community with state and federal legislators.
The reception will be March 10 at the Athletic Club of Columbus from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. The Athletic Club is located at 136 E. Broad St. in downtown Columbus. Legislators will use the informal atmosphere as an opportunity meet opinion leaders from prominent sportsmen’s organizations, statewide.

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray (D) has released the concealed handgun license (CHL) statistics for the fourth quarter of 2008 and the year-end report, Ohio Concealed Handgun Law – 2008 Annual Report. Just as we have seen a spike in demand for guns, we see a strong surge in concealed carry applications from people who want to carry a concealed weapon (CCW).
The fourth quarter has generally been a good quarter for licenses issued, but demand in the waning months of 2008 was stronger than anyone expected. The 10,668 regular licenses issued was an unprecedented 111% increase over the same period a year earlier. There were more licenses issued in the last three months of 2008 than the last quarter of 2006 and 2007 combined. It is also the highest demand for new licenses since the 3rd quarter of 2004, the first full quarter the CCW law was in effect.
Additionally, approximately 78% of expiring CHLs (5,476) were renewed in the fourth quarter. That means 265 people received a new license to carry a firearm every working day. New licenses averaged over 175 every business day – stronger demand than any quarter in the last 4 years!

Firearms Industry Reminds Congress to Respect Second Amendment Rights
Responding to Attorney General Eric Holder’s comment Wednesday that the Obama Administration will attempt to reinstate a ban against semi-automatic rifles, the National Shooting Sports Foundation reminded Congress and all Americans that such a ban would cause jobs to be lost in a difficult economy, have no effect on reducing crime and would deprive millions of law-abiding sportsmen and gun owners of their Constitutional right to own the firearm of their choice.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife is proposing moving the muzzle loading season for deer. It is good to question the status quo. I enjoy a good debate and applaud the Division biologists for examining alternatives. But I believe the Division is missing the opportunity to leave muzzle loading season alone, for some very valid reasons.
