Polls show support for new efforts to regulate guns shrinking

The Houston Chronicle is reporting that more Americans than ever oppose new government efforts to regulate guns, even despite Obama administration efforts to blame law-abiding Americans for Mexico’s drug-related violence problem.

The report says recent polls show shrinking support for new gun control measures and strong public sentiment for enforcing existing laws instead. So strong is the shift in public opinion that a proposed assault-weapons ban — once backed by three in four Americans — now rates barely one in two.

Congressional Democrats introduce legislation to ban sales of guns between individuals at gun shows

The Cybercast News Service is reporting that Congressional Democrats have introduced legislation that would ban the sale of guns between individuals at gun shows. The legislators staged a press conference with a few survivors of students killed at Virginia Tech, even though the mass murderer responsible for the Virginia Tech massacre did not acquire his guns at gun shows (nor was he deterred by the Commonwealth of Virginia’s one-gun-a-month rule).

Love Thy Neighbor: Buy a Gun

Mankind pulled civilization out of the mud somewhere in the ancient past. In creating society, people agreed to a non-spoken compact that required everyone to look out for their neighbor. We aren’t talking about a communist society where the government dictates that everyone work for the collective good, but instead an agreement between honest law-abiding people that made it reprehensible to leave your neighbor to die.

The same holds true, or used to hold true, when it came to stopping common crime, whether violent crime against a person, or a property crime. As the American government grew in power and influence in a citizen’s life, it destroyed the agreement between honest people to care for each other.

Today in America many citizens won’t step in to protect the personal safety of their neighbors because, over the years, everyone was brainwashed by the government to give up freedom for security.

The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette is reporting that the Fairfield County (OH) Sheriff’s Office experienced a surge in concealed handgun licenses (CHLs) issued for the first four months of 2009, and that with nearly 700 new and renewal licenses issued this year, the county is well on its way to surpassing the number issued in 2004 – the first year the county issued licenses.

The Problem With “Intrastate” Firearm Laws

There has been much excitement sweeping the gun-owner boards recently over Montana’s passage of a law and Texas’ introduction of a bill “exempting” homemade firearms from Federal regulation.

Homemade firearms are often referred to as “intrastate” firearms on the theory that they are created and exist entirely within one state. By contrast, “interstate” firearms are ones that are created and/or moved across state lines. The distinction is important on the theory that Congress regulates firearms on the basis of powers granted under the Interstate Commerce clause, including the powers granted Congress to adopt laws necessary and proper to the regulation of Interstate Commerce.

A Good Gun Shop…

There are thousands of gun shops in this great country. Some are great ambassadors, but others give the whole shooting industry a black eye. So, what does a good gun store do to make it good?

A good gun shop will try to help the customer choose the best gun for them and not the shop’s bottom line. They understand that this week’s most popular model is not suited for everyone. They know that not everyone needs a Glock or 12-Gauge shotgun.

Toledo Mayor tells residents police can’t protect them

When word of significant cuts to the Toledo police force first came out, one senior police officer issued the following recommendation to city residents:

“Buy guns. Invest in precious metals: lead, gun power and brass.”

And now, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner is admitting the reason why this is such good advice:

“Violent crimes, shootings, are not ever prevented by the presence of a police officer, no matter how many thousands of police officers you have.”

Longtime readers of Superman comics will recall “Bizarro World”, a place where right is wrong, up is down, and everything is basically the opposite of the way things normally occur. Seinfeld fans will recall an entire episode devoted to Bizarro World. It seems like sportsmen are living in Bizarro World, given the unholy alliance between the nation’s top animal rights group and America’s most conservative talk radio host.

Hunters, anglers and trappers were stunned to learn on April 24th that Rush Limbaugh had produced two ads supporting the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Sportsmen contend that many people donate to HSUS believing the group operates or assists local dog and cat shelters. Instead the group uses contributions to ban and restrict hunting rights. How is it possible that a man who used to rail against “environmentalist wackos” would be collaborating with an organization whose president has openly admitted he’d like to see all hunting banned?

Conservation efforts benefit from 31 percent jump in excise taxes

Sales remain strong for manufacturers

Firearm and ammunition manufacturers paid more than $98 million in excise taxes in the fourth quarter of 2008, up 31.2 percent over the same period in 2007, according to figures released earlier today by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

From Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, $27.6 million was collected for pistols and revolvers, $35 million for long guns and $35.5 million for ammunition. Compared to the same period in 2007, collections were up 70.1 percent for handguns, 11.4 percent for long guns and 31.1 percent for ammunition.
