Demand is soaring for concealed carry licenses in Ohio

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray (D) has released the concealed handgun license (CHL) statistics for the first quarter of 2009. The demand for concealed carry licenses has been torrid. It appears that a lot of new gun owners are not content to leave their weapon locked up at home; they want to carry it for self defense.

The first quarter in 2009 continued the trend of increasing demand at an increasing rate. The 16,323 regular licenses issues was a whopping 139% increase over the same period a year earlier and was the second quarter in a row that demand more than doubled compared with the prior year. There were an additional 4,906 licenses renewed during the quarter, which is approximately 75% of the licenses expiring during the period. Add in another 41 Temporary Emergency Licenses (TELs), and Ohio Sheriffs issued a whopping 21,248 licenses in the first three months of 2009. That is more licenses than were issued for the entire year in 2006!

Obama’s Supreme Court nomination is a slap at the Second Amendment

BELLEVUE, WA – The nomination of Second Circuit Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace retiring Justice David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court is a slap at gun rights and the Second Amendment, the Second Amendment Foundation said today.

Judge Sotomayor, a New York native, ruled on a Second Circuit Appeals Court panel that the Second Amendment is not a fundamental right and does not apply to the states in the case of Maloney v. Cuomo. This ruling is in direct conflict with a Ninth Circuit Court ruling in the Nordyke v. King case in California that the Second Amendment is incorporated through the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

“While Democrats in Congress have been making great strides in the gun rights arena, refusing to consider a renewal of the Clinton gun ban, and offering overwhelming bipartisan support for legislation allowing citizens to carry firearms in national parks, President Obama just demonstrated that he prefers judges who oppose Second Amendment rights,” said SAF founder Alan M. Gottlieb.

We have reached a new low when it comes to the Federal government’s overzealous attempts to fight crime. According to a recent news story, the FBI and police in Westerville, Ohio are going to try and enforce a ban on wearing a hood, hat, sunglasses or use of a cell phone inside local banks.

According to a quote attributed to the local police, would be bank robbers will be easy to spot since law abiding bank patrons won’t be wearing a hat or talking on a cell phone.

As we reported earlier this month, more Americans than ever oppose new government efforts to regulate guns, in spite of the best efforts of the media propaganda machine’s anti-gun bias.

There is also growing evidence that the years of pro-gun advocates’ warnings about the danger of declaring spaces to be “gun free” zones (i.e. infringing on citizens’ Second Amendment rights) is also starting to penetrate.

Thanks to a story by WCPO (Cincinnati ABC) reporter Brendan Keefe aired late last year, thousands of viewers in the greater Cincinnati area were exposed to a fact that the establishment media is normally fond of suppressing:

The vast majority of multiple victim public shootings occur in so-called “gun-free” zones.

And since the original story was aired, Keefe has updated the web version in response to viewer questions who may have just had their first-ever exposure to the failure of “gun-free” zones to stop mass shootings.

Memorial Day 2009 – Remembering Those Who Gave All to Defend Our Rights

We are often thanked for all we do to secure firearms rights in Ohio, but this Memorial Day, it’s important to remember all those who have come before us, and won all of the big battles. It is only through their sacrifice and perseverance that we are able to fight today’s battles.

While it’s easy to get caught up in the moment of your own struggles, our lives as we know them would not be possible without the many victories of our veterans. Again and again they have paid the ultimate sacrifice to secure our freedom.

Exposed: Humane Society of the United States Fundraising Scandal

Townhall.com – When you hear the words “Humane Society,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it a pet shelter where families can adopt unwanted dogs and cats? Or is it a super-rich animal rights lobbying group that runs absolutely no pet shelters, and gives less than 4 percent of its $100 million budget to those who do?

We thought so.

Meet the Humane Society of the United States. This slick and moneyed PETA clone has pulled the wool over the eyes of countless Americans – including Rush Limbaugh, who recently recorded two public service announcements for the group.

Last week WSB-TV in Atlanta uncovered what Rush has somehow been unable to see: that HSUS is “an organization actively misleading donors to get money.”

2009 Ohio Spring Turkey Harvest Tops 18,500

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Hunters checked 18,936 wild turkeys during Ohio’s four-week, statewide spring turkey-hunting season that ended May 17, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

The preliminary total represents a 2 percent increase over last year’s preliminary harvest number of 18,556.

Ashtabula County again led the state in the number of turkeys killed with 831. Counties with additional high harvest numbers were: Ashtabula-831, Harrison-631, Tuscarawas-609, Clermont-580, Trumbull-568, Guernsey-560, Highland-517, Washington-485, Jackson-475, and Coshocton-454.

In addition to the turkeys taken during the regular season, young hunters harvested another 1,814 birds during a special hunt for ages 17 and younger held April 18-19.

The ODNR Division of Wildlife estimates that more than 75,000 people hunted turkeys during the season. Prior to the start of the spring hunting season, state wildlife biologists estimated the wild turkey population in Ohio to be more than 200,000 birds.

Democrats’ “No Fly No Buy” bill is all about NY politics

Newsday reported recently that New York Representatives Carolyn McCarthy, Steve Israel, and Carolyn Maloney, all Democrats, called a press conference to promote a new bill aimed at law-abiding gun owners. McCarthy’s “No fly no buy Act” would prohibit anyone who is on the “no fly” list from purchasing firearms.

The bill seems to be a political tool, rather than a serious attempt to fix any problem. Sadly that seems to be the normal mode of operation in D.C. these days.

Congressional vote to restore self-defense in national parks could come today [UPDATE: Pro-Gun Vote Tally 279-147!]

While sky-high gun and ammo sales, and comments from Obama cabinet officials advocating new gun bans continue to dominate media coverage, a couple of pieces of legislation are being held up in Congress due to the attachment of pro-gun amendments.

Earlier in the Spring, when Democrats pushed a bill which sought to give the District of Columbia congressional representation, pro-gun legislators introduced an amendment designed to restore gun rights in the District. The bill, which had a great deal of momentum and was expected to pass, ground to a halt when enough Democrats joined Republicans in voting for the amendment. The Democrats’ successful election strategy of running pro-gun candidates in rural districts had back-fired on the majority’s liberal leadership.

Last week, it happened again. A bi-partisan coalition of pro-gun Senators (27 Democrats and one independent joining 39 Republicans) succeeded attaching an amendment that would restore self-defense rights to visitors of the country’s national parks to a bill purported to “reform” the credit card industry.

The principle sponsor of the amendment, Republican Sen. Tom Coburn, initially said he expected the amendment to be nixed in a conference committee. This week, however, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has signaled that there are enough pro-gun votes in the House to concur with the Senate amendment, and also to move ahead with efforts to restore gun rights to D.C. residents.
