Last week, President Obama signed a bill which, besides changing credit card laws, says that in National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges, the laws about gun carrying will be the same as in the host state. So in Colorado, for example, you will be allowed to carry a concealed handgun in Rocky Mountain National Park, if you have a state-issued concealed carry permit. In Vermont’s Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, you can carry at will, since no permit is required for carry in the rest of Vermont. In New Jersey’s Gateway National Recreation Area, you will need a permit, and since almost no-one in New Jersey except retired police is ever granted a permit, almost no-one will be able to carry there.

The law goes into effect nine months hence, as do the changes in credit card laws.

Senate Republicans take aim at Ohio Division of Wildlife

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has experienced a number of budget issues and continued cuts. Curiously some of the more serious cuts came at the hands of Senate Republicans and were made in areas that are self-funded.

The Division of Wildlife and Division of Watercraft are two ODNR Divisions that are self-funded. Both have found themselves unexpectedly in the crosshairs of Senate Republicans under the guise of budget cuts. In reality, there is nothing about budget cuts involved despite what the Republican sound bites of “doing more with less in government” may say.

I miss America.

Seriously.

If you ask me what I miss most, I’ll probably tell you I miss youth. But it’s not the youth that I miss, it’s the attitude that existed when I was younger.

Growing up in the middle of the past century – at the end of the last millennium (gosh, I do feel old now), it was perfectly acceptable to leave your doors unlocked, the keys in your ignition, and your mower in your front yard.

Today, police don’t even leave their cruisers unlocked when they get out to work a traffic accident. Times have changed – drastically.

But the 2008 crime statistics released by the FBI have put a somewhat more rosy face on what is really not a great situation. Crime is down in big cities, but it’s up in small towns.

More women taking advantage of firearms classes

The Port Clinton News-Herald is reporting on a mother-daughter partnership that offers all-female gun education courses, as well as National Rifle Association-certified concealed carry courses.

Joy and Faith Ferkel have instructed more than 75 men and women, who are now better prepared to defend themselves and their families. They say most of the female students have taken advantage of all-women classes.

OH Atty General files Motion to Intervene in Buckeye Firearms Foundation suit against City of Cleveland

Buckeye Firearms Association is pleased to report that Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray’s office has filed a Motion to Intervene in a lawsuit filed by Buckeye Firearms Foundation, Inc. against the City of Cleveland.

The lawsuit was filed by the Ohio not-for profit foundation, to stop the City of Cleveland from prosecuting law-abiding gun owners under local ordinances that restrict gun ownership and concealed carry (CCW). The lawsuit also asks the Court to declare 20 different local ordinances unconstitutional on the grounds of state preemption of firearm laws, on the grounds that the ordinances are in conflict with R.C. 9.68.

In response to the Foundation’s complaint, the City filed an Answer alleging that R.C. 9.68 is unconstitutional. The City further argues that R.C. 9.68 is not a general law of the State of Ohio and is therefore an unconstitutional attempt by the General Assembly to preempt local ordinances in violation of the Home Rule Amendment of the Ohio Constitution.

The Attorney General’s response was quick and decisive.

Contenders Marksmanship Pistol & Rifle Club Grand Opening a roaring success

On Saturday, May 23, Second Amendment advocates and firearms enthusiasts gathered just east of Lancaster near Rushville, Ohio, to celebrate the opening of the new Contenders Marksmanship Pistol & Rifle Club.

The program got under way at noon. Following a short prayer delivered by Coach Dave Daubenmire of Pass the Salt Ministries, the coach introduced Larry Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Owners of America.

The truth will out: Banned HSUS fundraising scandal video back up on the Internet!

Recently, we published a story highlighting a television report from Atlanta which exposed a major fundraising scandal at the anti-hunting Humane Society of the United States.

Soon thereafter, HSUS launched an all-out war on WSB for publishing its story. According to blogger Amanda Nolz, “HSUS aggressively worked to pull the plug on this video before it did too much damage to their reputation. They quickly pushed WBS-TV to take the video and text of the story off of its website, and they have accomplished in getting all of the text versions removed from Google, as well.”

The truth, as they say, will out. Or, in this case, the video will stream again.
