By Jim Shepherd On Friday, it would be nice to be able to talk about the anticipation with which we all look toward the weekend. After all, it’s the most continuous time…
Firearms Industry Rejects National Park Service Classification of Traditional Ammunition as a Health Threat
NEWTOWN, Conn.–In response to an announcement regarding a National Parks Service program encouraging hunters to voluntarily switch to alternative ammunition, the National Shooting Sports Foundation rejected NPS’s categorization of traditional ammunition as a health threat. NSSF is offering to work with the National Park Service to develop measures to educate hunters about steps they can take to prevent scavengers from ingesting lead fragments of spent traditional ammunition. The park service is proposing to ban, at a minimum, the use of lead bullets, shot and sinkers in the park system by NPS personnel.
While no scientific evidence supports restricting the use of traditional ammunition containing lead components, the firearms industry believes that establishing voluntary measures is a more reasoned step than banning traditional ammunition, a drastic policy decision unsupported by science. NPS has raised concerns that lead bullet fragments found in game meat could cause lead poisoning in humans, a charge not borne out in scientific studies, including a recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.
Dave Yost implores supporters: Don’t let Mike DeWine turn back the clock on gun rights
By Chad D. Baus
If Republican Attorney General candidate Dave Yost has anything to say about it, former Senator Mike DeWine’s vehement anti-gun record will be front and center in the upcoming GOP primary battle.
A fundraising letter being circulated by Yost is drawing attention to DeWine’s record of support for some of the most radical gun control proposals in the past two decades, and the importance to gun owners of the office to which DeWine now aspires.

Lame duck Ohio Sen.Voinovich shafts gun owners AGAIN; Expect voters to direct anger at other “Taft Republicans”
By Chad D. Baus
For the second time in as many weeks, Ohio’s lame duck Senator, Republican George Voinovich, shafted gun owners on a key vote in the United States Senate.
SCOTUSBLOG.com is reporting that, after two days of floor debate, the Senate voted 68-31 to confirm Second Circuit Judge Sonia Sotomayor as a Justice of the Supreme Court. Her first full term will begin Oct. 5.
Sotomayor has been strongly opposed by gun rights advocates during her confirmation hearings, having previously held that the Second Amendment does not apply to individuals. Senator George Voinovich and a handful of other turncoat Republicans voted with Democrats in favor of her confirmation.
Just two weeks ago, Voinovich cast a vote that ensured a Democrat filibuster against nationwide reciprocity would prevent passage of the popular concept.
Senate Bill SB-2099 e-mails are a hoax
In recent weeks, people from all over Ohio have been bombarding us with copies of a hoax e-mail about Senate Bill SB-2099.
The e-mail warns that SB-2099 would require you to list all guns on your IRS income tax return.
No matter how many times we explain that this e-mail is a hoax, people just keep forwarding it to us. The NRA reports it’s getting hundreds of these forwarded e-mails.
Trust us. This is a hoax. We’ve checked it out. The NRA has checked it out.

Does teaching gun safety help stop accidents? More Ohio police officers say yes.
By Chad D. Baus
To hear the media darlings at the anti-gun Joyce Foundation-funded International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) tell it, guns – the tools some criminals use – are responsible for violence and accidental deaths in America, rather than the criminal or the ignorant. And every police office thinks so.
Or do they?
Ohio Liber-Tea Party attracts 10,000 people
Central Ohio Chair, addresses the crowd.
By Linda Walker
Ohio Liberty Council sponsored the first-ever statewide Tea Party at the Ohio Statehouse in downtown Columbus on Saturday, August 1. Between eight and ten thousand people attended this massive, well-thought out, well-organized event.
TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Parties have popped up all over the country since the federal government has been stimulating our economy with trillions of “The People’s” tax dollars. The People are taking a stand against all of the tax and spending increases, and other losses of freedom, that are currently running rampant with our Congress and the President.
After a short rain prior to the event, it turned out to be a beautiful day for the rally. Several speakers talked about the Tenth Amendment and Sovereignty of the States Resolution, which were the main focus of the Tea Party. The featured speaker was “The Judge”, Andrew Napolitano, a popular Fox News contributor. He received a great response from the audience.
Quarterly Firearm and Ammunition Excise Taxes up 43%
NEWTOWN, Conn. — During a time period of great economic uncertainty, firearm and ammunition sales have continued to increase throughout the country.
According to the most recent Firearms and Ammunition Excise Tax Collection Report, released earlier today by the Department of the Treasury, firearm and ammunition manufacturers paid more than $109.8 million in the first calendar quarter of 2009; up 43% over the same time period reported in 2008.
This dramatic increase follows a 31.3 percent increase in excise taxes from the previous quarter (4Q, 2008) and eight straight months of increased FBI background checks – another strong indicator of firearm sales.
