We publish a lot of stories that are read by a lot of people.

Over the past year, more than 410,000 separate individuals visited this site from the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Ireland, France, India, and 163 other countries looking for information about guns and gun rights.

And our authors served up well over 550 original articles, an average of 11 new articles every week.

So we got curious about what articles were the most popular over the year, and came up with the following list. These are the top 25 stories of 2009, the events and topics that you found most interesting since January 1.

NRA members smarter than newspaper writers

Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne Jr.’s latest op-ed piece deals with guns and has been reprinted in many papers, including the Columbus Dispatch under the heading, “Members of the NRA wiser than leaders.”

It is another version of old argument that gun owners want reasonable restrictions on guns to protect our society from criminals killing people, but the evil NRA empire does not care about police or death rates and simply imposes its will on law-makers who would instantly be thrown from office if they ever cross the NRA in the slightest regard. It is pure hogwash, but if your only education comes from “news” papers than it will all sound familiar to you.

Deer-gun Hunting Continues December 19-20

Ohio’s popular deer-gun season will run an additional weekend, Saturday and Sunday, December 19-20, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

The extra weekend days were added beginning in 2006 in response to comments received from hunters for more weekend time to hunt. Deer can be hunted with a legal muzzleloader, handgun or shotgun from one half-hour before sunrise until sunset on December 19-20. Ohio’s pre-hunting season population was estimated at 650,000 white-tailed deer.

Two Against Two: Bloomberg And Lautenberg Pair Up To Violate The Second And Fourteenth Amendments

Is your name the same as, or similar to, that of someone on the FBI’s “terrorist watchlist?” Or, have you been erroneously placed on the watchlist? You can’t find out because the FBI won’t say exactly why people get watchlisted, won’t say who has been watchlisted, and therefore doesn’t offer watchlisted people the chance to clear their names immediately. In fact, small children, federal air marshals, military personnel who have fought terrorists overseas, the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, members of Congress, and many other good Americans have even been stopped from boarding commercial aircraft for this reason. The government has reported that there were 700,000 names in the watchlist as of April 2007, and the ACLU estimates that the number has since risen to 1.3 million.

Obviously, these people are not all terrorists. However, politicians who hate the Second Amendment know that some of the good Americans who are erroneously on the list, or who get incorrectly flagged by the list, are gun owners. And, because the FBI won’t reveal its watchlisting criteria, those politicians think that more gun owners can be placed on the list over time, by like-minded bureaucrats making arbitrary determinations about who ought to have guns.

Two concealed carry bills to get second hearing

UPDATE – The December 15 hearing has been canceled. We will provide updates when another hearing is scheduled.

Chairwoman Linda Bolan (D-1) has scheduled HB203 and HB158 for second hearings on Tuesday, December 15 at 3:00 p.m. in Room 122 of the Ohio Statehouse.

HB203 would allow persons with a concealed handgun license to carry their firearms into any restaurant providing they are not, and do not become intoxicated. The bill is sponsored by Representatives Danny Bubp (R-88) and Jarrod Martin (R-70).

Ohio license holders have proven themselves to be responsible in the five plus years of concealed carry in Ohio, and decades more beyond our borders. There is no compelling reason to deny someone the right to carry a firearm based on what the person at the next table might be drinking.

NSSF warns of threat to ammunition availability, calls for action

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has notified members that, as demand for ammunition continues to outpace supply, “it is critically important that an amendment authored by Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) to a seemingly obscure hazardous material bill (HR 4016) be attached to the legislation during consideration on the House floor.”

The NSSF notes that the amendment being pushed by Graves will help protect the shipment of materials necessary for the manufacturing of ammunition, and warns that without the Graves Amendment, the rate of production will slip, perhaps precipitously.

Tuscarawas County Leads 2009 Ohio Deer-gun Harvest

Ohio hunters took 114,633 white-tailed deer during the state’s popular, weeklong deer-gun season, which ran November 30 through December 6, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. In 2008, hunters killed a preliminary total of 116,798 deer during the same time period.

Counties reporting the highest numbers of deer brought to Ohio check stations last week included Tuscarawas-5,901; Harrison-4,310; Guernsey-4,289; Licking-3,734; Coshocton-3,680; Washington-3,589; Holmes-3,265; Belmont-3,238; Athens-3,049; and Knox-3,046.
