January background checks on firearm sales rank second all-time; Tops 2008 by 18.7 percent
The National Shooting Sports Foundation’s research department reports 1,119,229 NICS background checks were conducted on the sale of firearms in January, ranking the month as the second highest January for NICS checks.
This figure, while being a 7.8 percent decrease from the 1,213,885 checks conducted in January 2009 — the early stage of an ongoing surge in firearms and ammunition sales — is an increase of 18.7 percent over checks in January 2008.
Data was provided by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

Pro-gun Facebook fan page sabotaged by anti-gun Brady Center?
On December 4, 2009, Buckeye Firearms Association launched a Facebook fan page. Within two months, we grew to over 4,400 fans who were hungry for pro-gun news and information.
On February 8, 2010, our Facebook fan page vanished. No warning. No reason given.
How could this happen? We have only one clue: The day before, our Facebook fan page administrator had the audacity to post a pro-gun message on the Brady Center’s anti-gun fan page.
Did the Brady Center sabotage our page? We have no proof, but you can be the judge.
Normally, we have no contact with the hoplophobic Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. But a news item prompted our administrator to visit their Facebook page. There were comments there on both sides of the gun rights issue. So, the administrator posted a short message:
If you’re tired of the anti-liberty nonsense here, visit Buckeye Firearms Association.
That’s it. No cursing. No threats. Nothing discourteous or out of line. Just a simple invitation.
Shortly afterward, ALL the pro-gun comments vanished. And so did our Facebook page. Coincidence?
Caught on tape: Dem’s Sec. State candidate Maryellen O’Shaughnessy defending Columbus gun ban
By Chad D. Baus
Less than two weeks after the Ohio Democrat Party leaders, and Governor Ted Strickland, announced they would not support the candidacy of Jennifer Garrison for Secretary of State due to concerns about her support for gun rights, among other issues, the Democrats’ anti-gun replacement, Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, has officially announced her candidacy for the office.
To fully understand the level of O’Shaughnessy’s opposition to gun rights, one need only to go back to late 2006. In November of that year, the Ohio General Assembly voted to pass HB347, legislation designed to ensure uniformity of firearms laws in the state of Ohio, by an overwhelming margin. Despite its level of support, Republican Governor Bob Taft vetoed the legislation, forcing the General Assembly to return and override his veto in mid-December.
Five days after the veto override, O’Shaughnessy, then a city councilwoman, appeared on Capitol Square, an Ohio News Network (ONN panel show hosted by John Fortney, to voice the city’s displeasure with passage of the law, which rendered they City of Columbus’ assault weapons ban defunct.
Buckeye Firearms Association Legislative Chair Ken Hanson was also a guest that day.
Obama supporter hosts shooting (!) fundraiser for anti-gun Ohio Supreme Court Justice Judith Lanzinger
By Chad D. Baus
Gun owners and hunters often feel as though the only time some politicians know where they are is during election season. There can be no better example of this than the following Republican campaign fundraiser announcement:
Please join Justice Maureen O’Connor and Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger for a Pheasant & Quail Hunt hosted by Rocky Saxbe…
To attend the fundraiser, which will be held later this month in Champaign County, donors are asked to give $1000 per candidate ($2000 total) for the hunt and dinner.
But here’s the rub. While Justice O’Connor is pro-gun, and a long-time friend of this PAC, the same cannot be said for the other Republican candidate involved in this fundraiser, nor can it be said of the event host.

Mike DeWine to have pro-gun primary challenger (despite Ohio Republican Party’s best efforts)
By Chad D. Baus
Just two weeks to the day after Ohio GOP chair Kevin DeWine worked to orchestrate an unopposed primary for his anti-gun cousin Mike by enticing pro-gun candidate Dave Yost to drop out of the race for Attorney General, the Dayton Daily News is reporting that Hardin County attorney Steve Christopher has announced that he will challenge DeWine.
NRA on anti-gunners’ protest against Starbucks: “Maybe Brady Campaign Should Switch To Decaf”
The hand-wringers at the Brady Campaign must have figured out what the rest of us have known for quite some time. Having been rendered all but entirely irrelevant, at least for the time being, the group is resorting to weird publicity stunts, in a vain attempt to again be taken seriously by its former not-so-secret admirers in the national anti-gun news media.
Last month, the group gave President Obama an “F” for “failed leadership” on gun control, accusing him of “squandering” the opportunity to push for tighter gun control laws. Now it’s attacking Starbucks for allowing people to carry firearms in its stores as provided for by state law.
Get this doozie: “It’s everyone’s right to sit in a restaurant or coffee shop with their families without intimidation or fear of guns,” the Brady Campaign says, in its modern rendition of FDR’s famous “freedom from fear” quote.
