An Ohio man is recovering from a gunshot wound after being attacked in an ambush by people who told had lured him to Dayton on the promise of buying his car, which he had advertised on Craigslist.com.
As it turns out, however, the car thieves weren’t the only ones carrying guns.

On February 20th, over 40 local patriots rallied at Black Wing Shooting Center in Delaware, OH to support the Ohio and national Second Amendment Marches.
Literature and promotional material regarding the marches and trip-planning information was disseminated to the participants. Buckeye Firearms Association volunteers Steve Loos and Sara Arnold, along with myself, welcomed guests and introduced the day’s speakers.
The next chairman of a key house committee with oversight over federal funding for wildlife conservation has a long history of opposing hunting, trapping, and gun ownership.
U.S. Representative Jim Moran (D- VA) is expected to be named Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies. This subcommittee oversees funding for the Department of Interior and its various agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This makes this chair one of the most powerful positions influencing public policy on federal lands including whether to keep such land open to sportsmen.
Rep. Moran has sponsored and cosponsored a number of anti-hunting and anti-trapping bills during his time in Congress. One of his most high profile battles against sportsmen was an effort to ban the use of bait to hunt black bears on federal land despite being considered a valid management option by wildlife professionals in numerous states. This effort earned him the support of the nation’s leading anti-hunting group, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

On Thursday, February 25, Athens News editor Terry Smith, who also teaches journalism courses at Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, published an editorial on the topic of the state and national tea party movement in which he encouraged Congressman Democrat Zack Space to refuse an invitation to appear at an event.
While the greater scope of Smith’s article falls outside of the scope of this website, the editor made comments about Buckeye Firearms Association that need to be addressed.

In a news release issued Monday, the Ohio Liberty Council, describing itself as “a non-partisan grass-roots volunteer organization comprised of leaders from tea party and other liberty-minded groups,” said it has invited all the candidates running in the 18th Congressional District primary election in May.
The Liberty Council’s coalition includes the Buckeye Firearms Association (a hard conservative political group that disguises itself as a gun-rights outfit), “9/12 projects” in Central Ohio and Columbus (groups inspired by Fox News flamethrower Glenn Beck), tea parties in Dayton and Cincinnati, and other “liberty” groups. (emphasis added)
I found Smith’s reference to Buckeye Firearms Association as “a hard conservative political group that disguises itself as a gun-rights outfit” to be quite interesting, given our history of endorsing the strongest candidate on our one issue, no matter what their party, and wrote to tell him so.

As we reported last November, Attorney General Richard Cordray is a co-sponsor on an amicus brief in landmark gun rights case heard earlier today by the United States Supreme Court. The brief, which Cordray’s office and its counterpart in Texas led the writing of and which was signed by 38 state attorneys general, argues that these rights should be protected from undue restrictions imposed by state and local governments.
As a Cleveland Plain Dealer story notes today, that puts the State of Ohio at odds with anti-gun city governments in places like Cleveland and Columbus.
Editor’s Note: The United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments today in the Second Amendment case, McDonald, et al., v. Chicago, et al. (08-1521). In the 2008 Heller decision, the Supreme Court struck down Washington, D.C.’s handgun ban and gunlock requirements. Unsurprisingly, gun control advocates predicted disaster. They were wrong. What actually happened in our nation’s capital after the Heller decision ought to be remembered [today] as the Supreme Court hears a similar constitutional challenge to the Chicago handgun ban.
When the Heller case was decided, Washington’s Mayor Adrian Fenty warned: “More handguns in the District of Columbia will only lead to more handgun violence.” Knowing that Chicago’s gun laws would soon face a similar legal challenge, Mayor Richard Daley was particularly vocal. The day that the Heller decision was handed down, Daley said that he and other mayors across the country were “outraged” by the decision and he predicted more deaths along with Wild West-style shootouts. Daley warned that people “are going to take a gun and they are going to end their lives in a family dispute.”
But Armageddon never arrived.
Hunters kill more than 260,000 deer for the first time
A total of 261,314 deer were killed during Ohio’s 2009-10 hunting season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. This season’s total surpasses the 2008-09 record total of 252,017.
“Ohio deer hunters had another great year and continue to play a vital role in managing Ohio’s deer herd. They’ve embraced regulation changes which increased the harvest of antlerless deer and they’ve donated a significant amount of venison to feed the less fortunate in Ohio through the Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry program,” said David M. Graham, chief of the Division of Wildlife.
Counties reporting the highest number of deer checked during the season were: Coshocton-9,635, Tuscarawas-9,009, Licking-8,571, Guernsey-8,289, Harrison-8,043, Muskingum-7,864, Knox-7,174, Holmes-6,211, Belmont-6,160, and Jefferson-5,888.
The deer-gun season resulted in the greatest portion of the overall harvest with 114,281 deer taken. Archery hunters took a total of 91,521 deer. Deer killed during the early muzzleloader season (491), at controlled hunts (690), youth-gun season (9,270), the extra deer-gun weekend (20,054), and the statewide muzzleloader season (25,007) added to the overall total.

A north Toledo homeowner and concealed handgun license (CHL)-holder was the victim of an attempted home robbery last week, and yet in an article covering the homeowner’s act of defending himself and shooting two intruders, the Toledo Blade refers only to the dead robber as a “victim.”
