Man shoots sex offender attempting home invasion; Columbus Dispatch describes aggressor as “victim”
By Gerard Valentino
Yet another potential home invasion ended with an honest law-abiding citizen using a gun for self-defense. According to The Columbus Dispatch, a convicted sex offender was shot while trying to break into an apartment and died from his injuries.
From the story:
Columbus police yesterday identified the victim in a Friday night shooting on the Northeast Side as Charles R. Sprague, 35, of Columbus.
Sprague was shot while trying to break into an apartment at 5764 Cooper Rd., said detective James Day of the homicide squad. A man inside the apartment fired shots because he felt threatened by Sprague, Day said.
“It appeared that the victim in this incident was the aggressor and that the shooter was acting in self-defense,” Day said. “He’d actually tried to force his way into the apartment at the back door when this occurred.”
Clearly, nobody wins when a criminal forces an honest person to use deadly force. However, considering the alternatives if the home invasion had been successful, this was a far better outcome.
A Tribute to Ben & Nikki Goeser
By Linda Walker
One year ago today, the world lost a special man that I never had the privilege of meeting. Yet this man left a huge impact on the world after his death.
On April 2, 2009, Hank Wise walked into Johnny’s Sports Bar in Nashville, Tenn. He had stalked Nikki Goeser as she and her husband Ben Goeser ran their karaoke business at various clubs throughout the area. Wise had tormented Nikki for months and had often been told to leave her alone. Yet that fateful night one year ago today left Ben Goeser gunned down by this jealous beast.
But the purpose of this story is not to dwell on this tragedy, but to talk about the positive results that have come from this horrible event.

A Fool For All Seasons
By Jim Shepherd
When I first started in journalism, most of the reporters and editors in the business enjoyed April 1. It was the day we might actually get to write the silly headlines, fabricated stories and outrageous quotes we joked about the other days of the year.
Not so much anymore.
It would be difficult to make up stories any more bizarre and outrageous than the ones that seem to consume most of the news time anymore.
Court Rules Concealed Carry Law Violates Workplace Safety Laws
By Ken Hanson, Esq.
A three judge panel today ruled that Ohio’s concealed carry law impermissibly violates several provisions of the state’s employment laws.
In what is sure to be a controversial opinion, the court held that “a person’s so-called right to self-defense cannot infringe upon the right of a person to be free from violence in their workplace. The evidence before us is clear – allowing handguns in the workplace violates the fundamental right of Ohioans to work their trade in a secure environment.”
The case arose originally out of a complaint filed with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission and Ohio Bureau of Worker’s Compensation.
“Ohio’s laws are well-settled in this area. The workplace cannot create an atmosphere of hostility, and must be free from recognized hazards,” said the court. “Plaintiff has clearly established that allowing persons to carry hidden, loaded guns creates an overtly hostile, and dangerous, work environment for him. Guns are clearly recognized hazards.”

Forget turkeys – it’s POLLING season in Ohio
By Chad D. Baus
It’s election season, which means it’s polling season.
A few recent surveys are worth taking note of as some Ohio gun owners begin early voting, while many others make plans to head to the polls on May 4.
From a March 11 The Washington Times editorial entitled “The NRA outshoots Obama“:
The National Rifle Association has a higher mean approval rating among likely voters than Barack Obama. This and other fascinating facts emerged from the Democracy Corps/Third Way national security survey released this week. According to its liberal authors, the “sobering” results of the survey provide “a wake-up call for President Obama, his party and progressives on national security.”
Back in Ohio, the The Dayton Daily News is reporting that Republican Rob Portman has a slight edge over both Democratic candidates – Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher – among voters in the U.S. Senate race in a poll released on Wednesday, March 24. And an unpopular President Obama is having an impact on the results.
Book Review: From My Cold Dead Fingers
By Jim Irvine
Justice Antonin Scalia, United States Supreme Court ruling in Mack/Printz v United States, June 27, 1997
This is how Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack, who sued the U.S. Government over the “Brady bill” gun control bill starts his book, From My Cold Dead Fingers. His case, summed up by the quote above is proof that even in this day and age, there is hope that our great country could one day return to the system of government that our Founding Fathers intended.
