NRA announces endorsement of Ted Strickland for Governor
The Associated Press is reporting that the National Rifle Association publicly endorsed Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland today in his race against Republican John Kasich.
According to the article, Strickland accepted the endorsement at a Monday event at a sporting goods store in Proctorville, near the Ohio-West Virginia border, which the NRA publicized to its members over the weekend. The NRA’s Ohio representative, John Hohenwarter, was scheduled to join Strickland before an audience of union steel workers later Monday in the Ohio River city of Martins Ferry.

SB239 and SB247: Two bills whose time has come
by Jim Irvine
Recently two crucial bills passed the Ohio Senate. One deals with critical improvements for concealed license holders (CHL). The other corrects a defect in Ohio law which has resulted in court orders being null and void and good people losing their right to defend themselves, even in their own homes.
NSSF asks gun owners to practice firearm safety every day
Children across the country will start their summer vacations this month and, as a result, spend more time at home — some of it unsupervised. With that in mind, the National Shooting Sports Foundation reminds gun owners to review their procedures for safely storing firearms in the home — a reminder in keeping with June being National Safety Month. A few simple steps — such as storing firearms unloaded with ammunition stored separately under lock and key — can help prevent an accident.
“The goal for firearm owners is to prevent a child or unauthorized person from accessing a loaded firearm,” said Steve Sanetti, president of NSSF, the trade association of the firearms and shooting sports industry. “Accidental firearm fatalities are at historic low levels thanks to the precautions taken by responsible firearms owners and because of safety programs promoted by NSSF and other concerned groups.”
Target shooting activity peaks during warm-weather months, too, making it an appropriate time to review and teach the rules of firearm safety so that everyone in your shooting group practices safe gun handling.
The four basic rules are…
Are you prepared for when a criminal comes knocking? This family was.
By Jim Irvine
Recently I sat down with a friend who was the target of a home invasion. He lives in a nice neighborhood with his wife and two young kids. In the middle of the night, there was a noise downstairs. “It sounded like the blinds being moved. My first thought was: ‘there is somebody in our house.'”
Such a thought can be terrifying. In a “hot burglary” the FBI statistics show that the home-owner is severely injured or killed 30% of the time. Thanks to the passing of SB184, our “Castle Doctrine” law puts the victim on good legal ground, as long as he knows and follows the law. Now is when you find out how good your training and preparation are.
My friend is an NRA certified firearms instructor. He teaches on a regular basis, and continues with his own education. He and his wife had thought about what they would do in such a situation. They had a plan and they implemented it.
“I got the gun and my wife called for police.” These are the two critical steps that should be done simultaneously. Have the immediate ability to defend your family and get help on the way.
May second highest all-time for background checks on firearm sales
Data released by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) reported 1,016,876 checks in May 2010, ranking the month the second highest May for most NICS checks.
This figure, while being a .6 percent decrease from the 1,023,102 checks conducted in May 2009, is an increase of 14.7 percent over checks in May 2008.
The total number of background checks reported since the beginning of NICS is 115,931,009.
Restaurant/ Car Carry legislation likely stalled until after November elections
by Jim Irvine
Last week we asked you to make phone calls to your State Representatives in an attempt to move two bills to Governor Strickland before the summer recess. Thank you to each of you who picked up the phone answered our call for action. Unfortunately, we were not successful. Phone calls are no longer needed.
While we share your frustration that Speaker Budish and the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives did not address our concerns before adjourning for the summer recess, and in all likelihood until after the November election, we must also note that we were asking them to skip the normal hearing process and amend our bills into some other piece of legislation that has already gone through the process.
The need for such a move arose because the Republican-controlled State Senate did not pass the bills and send them to the House until last week.
We will continue to work with Speaker Budish and other leadership to express the importance of our issues. It is important that all legislators have positive interactions with gun owners at campaign events or town hall meetings while they are back in district.
