Senator investigating allegations guns sold in purchases sanctioned by BATFE were later used to kill a Border Patrol agent
By Chad D. Baus
The Associated Press reported recenty that a U.S. senator is examining a claim that two guns sold in purchases sanctioned by federal firearms agents were later used in a December shootout that left a Border Patrol agent dead near the Arizona-Mexico border.
From the article:
Republican Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa said in a letter provided Monday to The Associated Press he had received information that appears to partially corroborate the claim received by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee about the guns.
“Members of the Judiciary Committee have received numerous allegations that the ATF sanctioned the sale of hundreds of assault weapons to suspected straw buyers, who then allegedly transported these weapons throughout the Southwest border area and into Mexico,” reads a letter sent Thursday from Grassley to Kenneth Melson, acting director of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The letter does not elaborate on the role possible of federal agents in the sale of the guns, and it could not be determined if the purchases were part of a sting operation.
ATF spokesman Tom Mangan declined to comment. Grassley spokeswoman Beth Pellett Levine declined to comment on the senator’s letter to Melson.
The article goes on to describe the details of the shoot-out that led to a Border Patrol agent’s death.
Restaurant/Car Carry scheduled for hearings in House & Senate; SB61 (Restoration of Rights) scheduled for testimony in Senate
[UPDATED 2/21 to include newly-added House committee hearing.]
[UPDATED 2/22 to reflect a change in Senate hearing meeting location.]
Both chambers of the Ohio General Assembly have scheduled hearings next week on pro-gun legislation supported by Buckeye Firearms Association.
The Senate Judiciary on Criminal Justice Committee, chaired by BFA “A+” -rated Sen. Tim Grendell (R), has scheduled a hearing on Tuesday, February 22 at 4:30 PM in the Senate Building’s Finance Hearing Room.
The committee will hear proponent/ opponent/ interested party testimony on SB17, sponsored by Senator Tim Schaffer (R) to allow citizens who hold a valid concealed handgun license (CHL) to carry a firearm in restaurants, and to reduce burdensome restrictions regarding how a license holder must transport a firearm in a car. This will be the second hearing for SB17.
The committee will also hold its second hearing on Sen. Jason Wilson’s (D) SB61, which will align Ohio law with federal statutes regarding the restoration of rights to Ohio firearms purchasers. Grendell has asked for proponent/ opponent/ interested party testimony.
Also on Tuesday, the House Committee on State Government and Elections, which is chaired by BFA “A” -rated Rep. Bob Mecklenborg, will hear proponent/ opponent/ interested party testimony on HB45, sponsored by Representatives Danny Bubp (R-West Union) and Terry Johnson (R-McDermott). This is the bill’s third hearing in the House. The meeting will be held at 1:30pm in Room 116.

House & Senate committees hear testimony in favor of pro-gun legislation
by Chad D. Baus
Two bills that would modify restaurant and car carry rules for Ohio concealed handgun license-holders, and a bill that seeks to align Ohio law with federal statutes regarding the restoration of rights to Ohio firearms purchasers, received hearings on Tuesday in the General Assembly.
The House Committee on State Government and Elections, chaired by BFA “A” -rated Rep. Bob Mecklenborg, heard proponent testimony Tuesday on HB45, sponsored by Representatives Danny Bubp (R-West Union) and Terry Johnson (R-McDermott). Representatives from Buckeye Firearms Association were on hand for this, the bill’s second hearing in the House.
A number of people, including two who represented Ohioans for Concealed Carry, offered supportive testimony. Perhaps the most pertinent testimony was offered by Joe Ballman, a person who was attacked by an armed robber as he left an establishment that had a liquor license. Ballmer’s testimony follows:
Tuscon fallout: Criminal acts and incompetence
-Ronald Reagan
by Tim Inwood
After a tragic shooting in the US, you can almost use a stopwatch to count the minutes before certain people will start pointing fingers and placing blame in places where it does not belong. Sadly the Tucson attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was just such an event. Within hours, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik stepped up to the microphones and began to blather on about how this was the fault of the right wing, Tea Party activists and radio talk show hosts. When pressed about his proof he admitted this was just his opinion. As time passed we learned classmates viewed the shooter, Jared Loughner, as a left-wing, pot head atheist. Hardly the kind of person who would listen to Rush Limbaugh or Neal Boortz.
Later we would learn that Sheriff Dupnik was well aware of the many complaints about Loughner’s erratic and eccentric behavior at school, as well as the fact he had sent Congresswoman Giffords a threatening letter and had been stalking her since 2007. Apparently in 2007 Loughner was at another event with Giffords and felt slighted by her answer to his questions. The grudge from that discussion in 2007 is what led to the shooting. For Sheriff Dupnik’s information, the Tea Party did not even exist when Loughner’s obsession with Rep. Giffords began.
Frankly, had Sheriff Dupnik done his job and charged Loughner with a crime, he never would have passed the FBI National Instant Check when he purchased the Glock model 19 pistol used in the shooting. It now appears Sheriff Dupnik was looking for a scapegoat to deflect attention from the fact that he was negligent and incompetent in dealing with Loughner. In my view, Sheriff Dupnik is the poster geezer for the kind of guy who should not be holding public office at all and should be removed from his office as a result of this incident.
Op-Ed: What liberals don’t know about guns, Chapter 217
by Ann Coulter
Fresh off of blaming Jared Loughner’s killing spree in the Tucson mall on Sarah Palin, liberals are now blaming it on high-capacity magazines. They might as well imprison everyone named “Jared” to prevent a crime like this from ever happening again.
During the presidential campaign, Obama said: “I don’t know of any self-respecting hunter that needs 19 rounds of anything. You don’t shoot 19 rounds at a deer, and if you do, you shouldn’t be hunting.” It would have been more accurate for him to end that sentence after the word “hunter.”
It’s so adorable when people who wouldn’t know a high-capacity magazine from Vanity Fair start telling gun owners what they should want and need.
In fact, high-capacity mags put a predator like Loughner at a disadvantage because they are so long, unwieldy and difficult to conceal. This may be why the Tucson shooting appears to be the first spree killing involving a high-capacity magazine. It would have been easier for Loughner to bring two guns.
On the other hand, for a homeowner who is a poor marksman, a large-capacity clip could be a lifesaver.
But after every multiple murder, liberals come up with some crackpot idea to “do something” that invariably involves infringing on some aspect of our Second Amendment rights.
“Americans Want Background Checks” … so say the media elite
by Larry S. Moore
NEWS FLASH – There is a federal background check required on all purchasers of firearms sold through gun stores which hold a Federal Firearms License (FFL). And you can’t operate a gun store selling firearms without an FFL.
It seems that journalists, especially those associated with various Buckeye State universities and colleges, are coming out of the woodwork to attack the Second Amendment. If one were to believe in conspiracy theories, the flow of one-sided liberal editorials, thinly disguised as journalistic reporting, couldn’t be a coincidence. If you don’t believe in conspiracy theories, then the liberal journalists smell blood and are becoming embroiled in a feeding frenzy since the tragic shootings in Tucson. The blood they are willing to shed is that of the Second Amendment and American freedoms. These are two factors of the United States that distinguish us from most of the rest of the world. Of course, journalists never mention controls on their First Amendment freedoms.
In a recent Columbus Dispatch column, Ohio university Professor Guido H. Stempel relies solely on surveys sponsored by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Two organizations conducted the survey, contacting 1,015 registered voters. There is no mention of where these voters reside. I have been a registered voter for 40 years and have yet to be contacted by any polling organization asking my views on guns.
Editor’s Note: Anti-gun Ohio University professors have been busy lately. Another anti-gun Ohio University professor was also recently published in The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette, and a letter to the editor by Buckeye Firearms Foundation Board of Directors member Gerard Valentino was published in response.
Bloomberg is making a full court press all over the United States on the gun issue since the Tucson tragedy. Too bad he doesn’t focus as much energy and attention to solving some problems, such as snow removal, in New York City. Or perhaps the problems caused by the opossums they brought in to control the rat infestation, specifically in the borough of Brooklyn. I’m sure there are no rats where the good Mayor lives, just as he is also well protected by his hired guns.
