Obama Admits Stealth Attack on Rights, Media Yawns

“I just want you to know that we are working on it,” Barack Obama told Sarah Brady regarding gun control. “We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar,” Obama said according to Brady.

This interesting bit of news was reported in an April 11 Washington Post Lifestyle section story about Obama’s gun control and regulatory policy wonk Steve Croley. Toward the end of the article the writer, Jason Horowitz, mentioned a March 30 meeting between Jim and Sarah Brady and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney during which the President “dropped in.” He then quotes Sarah Brady relating how President Obama gave his personal assurance that he and his administration were working hard on a gun control agenda. Brady reported that Obama then told them about advancing the agenda “under the radar.”

What is truly startling about this story is the way it has been totally ignored by the rest of the media. Compare the media’s current silence with what happened during the 2000 presidential campaign when then NRA Vice-President (and GOP activist) Kayne Robinson told a group of rights supporters in California that electing Bush would mean “we’ll have a president where we work out of their office, unbelievably friendly relations.” The media went into a feeding frenzy over this comment to such a degree that Bush distanced himself from the NRA, publicly endorsed reinstatement of the Clinton Assault Weapons Ban and withdrew overt support for the Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. The story was carried repeatedly on virtually every major media outlet in the country – and it was not based on anything Bush himself had said. Here the leader of a prominent organization is claiming that the President himself had avowed active support for a highly controversial agenda and admitted that he was violating his own promise of transparency in pursuit of that agenda. Yet the media ignores it.

Elderly home invasion victim shoots one of his attackers

Dayton CBS affiliate WHIO-TV is reporting that an elderly man shot a man suspected of breaking into his house Friday night.

From the report:

Around 11 p.m. Friday, 3 people broke into the house of an elderly man on Mia Avenue and demanded property, Lt. Kimberly Hill of the Dayton Police Department said.

The man refused to give them anything, so the group left and later returned, Hill said.

When they returned, a 20-year-old-man pushed the resident down and removed a television from the house. The young man re-entered the house to threaten the resident who shot the suspected robber in the back as he was exiting the house, Hill said.

James Brooks, the victim of the attempted burglary, told News Center 7 that he used to be a Jefferson Township police officer, but he had never fired his weapon while he was a part of the force.

Firearms Industry Responds to Mexico’s Threats of Litigation

(National Shooting Sports Foundation) – [Recently] a Mexican official confirmed that President Felipe Calderon’s government has hired U.S. trial lawyers to investigate possible litigation against U.S. gun manufacturers and firearms retailers, seeking to hold these lawful companies responsible for the criminal misuse of firearms in Mexico. Though the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, signed into law in 2005 by then President George W. Bush, prevents such frivolous lawsuits, the mere threat demands a response.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms industry, respects the work of President Calderon to willingly take on his country’s powerful drug cartels; however, we are disappointed that he would seek to hold law-abiding American companies responsible for crime in Mexico. This is especially troubling given investigative reports that show more than 80 percent of the firearms recovered in Mexico do not come from the United States. The most recent of these reports, from the independent research group STRATFOR, determined that less than 12 percent of the guns Mexico seized in 2008 came from the United States.

Furthermore, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), firearms traced in Mexico were originally sold at retail not recently, but, on average, 14 years earlier. This is completely inconsistent with any notion that a flood of newly purchased firearms are being illegally smuggled over the border. And let’s not forget that no retail firearm sale can be made in the U.S. until after an FBI criminal background check of the purchaser has been completed.

Exacerbating misconceptions about the firearms used by Mexican drug cartels, even mainstream publications such as the Washington Post, repeat erroneous information. For example, in [a recent] editorial the paper stated that Mexican drug cartels are “snapping up the military-style machine guns available in U.S. gun shops.” The fact is that machine guns are heavily regulated and virtually never sold at retail in the United States.

The logical conclusion of the gun ban lobby’s rhetoric: Ban everything

The anti-gun lobby spends a lot of time and money scaring Americans about what might happen if honest people are allowed more leeway in how, and where, they carry guns. All along, they assured us that gun-related disaster is a likely outcome each time a new pro-gun reform is suggested.

Concealed Carry laws were sure to lead to Wild West shootouts, Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground reform was going to turn Florida into a war zone. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley guaranteed that an end to his pet gun ban would lead to an increase in the murder rate. Now that the Chicago gun ban has been struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court, and he is sure to be proved wrong, Daley chose to announce his retirement.

Over the years, none of the predictions made by anti-gun extremists came true and their failed predication rate makes Miss Cleo seem like a true visionary.

Unfortunately, the anti-gun gang was still able to make hay because people, in general, are scared of the future.

A key piece of the anti-gun stance against guns is that a given gun might be used to kill someone, or a given law-abiding citizen might snap and go on a killing spree. If we transfer the anti-gun argument into other public policy issues it better illustrates how they use fear to push limitations on gun ownership.

Ohio restaurant carry legislation is a political bellwether

We all know that most racists begin their bigoted, ignorant statements by reminding everyone within earshot about how many friends they have who are minorities. Usually, the assurance of having friends who are minorities is a tip-off that a truly racist and indefensible statement is imminent.

Anti-gun politicians do the same thing when they are about to equate gun owners with gun-wielding crack addicts, or profess support for an especially egregious gun control scheme. “I support the Second Amendment, but…”

Ohio State Representative Matt Lundy (D-57) became the latest example of a politician continuing to profess a strong belief Second Amendment after actively working to destroy gun rights. Lundy aggressively opposed restaurant and car carry reform during committee hearings on HB45. Despite his role in trying to attach anti-gun amendments to the bill, his vote against the bill and his claims that Ohio’s concealed carry license holders are likely to take part in felonious assaults on law enforcement officers, Lundy still thinks he can fool gun owners.

When Buckeye Firearms Association called him out for his bait and switch tactics, Lundy made the following statement:

“I’m disappointed, but I’ve been very clear that I support the Second Amendment.”

Voting against bearing arms for self-defense in family restaurants, introducing anti-gun amendments, and claiming concealed carry license holders are a threat to law enforcement officers is a strange stance for anyone claiming to support the Second Amendment.

Ohio House Representatives receive letters from BFA and concerned constituents upon return to Columbus

Ohio House Representatives returning from spring recess on Monday received a letter from Buckeye Firearms Association addressing the status of Ohio’s Restaurant & Car Carry Rules Fix legislation (HB45/SB17).

The House version of the legislation, HB45, received five hearings in the House Committee on State Government and Elections before being passed on a 12-10 mostly party line vote. (One Republican, Rep. Richard Hollington [R-98], joined nine Democrats in opposition to the bill.) But more than six weeks have now passed without Republican House Speaker Bill Batchelder bringing the bill to the floor for a vote.

On April 13, the Ohio Senate passed their version of the bill (SB17) by a strong 25-7 majority. The bill is nearly identical to the House version, but it adds a provision to provide a way for people who were convicted of improperly transporting a firearm under the current law to receive relief if they would have been in compliance under the law as amended in SB17. Both bills now await the attention of the Republican-dominated House, but the Speaker has said his 59-member caucus is unable to muster the 50 votes necessary for passage.

Annual Meetings: NRA’s LaPierre calls out Obama administration’s Dept. of Justice and ATF for growing “gunwalker” scandal

“We’ve never witnessed anything like this rottenness, lying and corruption,” said Wayne LaPierre, NRA Executive Vice President and CEO “and we’ve had it. We’ve had it with Erica Holder and Hillary Clinton and the rest of this administration. And Lord knows, Americans have sure had it with the arrogant, sanctimonious, gun-hating liars who call themselves the national news media.”

That’s only a build up to the calling-out of Attorney General Holder, the President and his entire administration that took place Saturday at the National Rifle Association’s annual member’s meeting.

In Saturday’s membership meeting, LaPierre, NRA-ILA head Chris Cox and other members of the NRA executive team made it abundantly plain that the NRA was speaking out regarding the growing scandal that proves the NRA’s longstanding claim that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) is a rogue organization.

As Congressional investigators are being stonewalled regarding the ill-conceived ATF operation that not only encouraged, but sanctioned the movement of illegal guns into Mexico, the nation’s largest pro-Second Amendment group is going on the offensive.

“We’ve never witnessed anything like the rotten level of corruption, conspiracy and cover-up confronting us today. All because they hate Americans and our rights, more than they care about the lives of innocent people,” LaPierre told a crowd that sometime seemed to sit in shock at his unvarnished challenges to the administration.

“I’ll say that again,” LaPierre hammered, “Our government has been willing to let people die … to advance their assault on the Second Amendment. Our southern border proves it. When ATF officials ORDER lawful gun dealers to make illegal sales … that’s corrupt.”

In what was a blunt, no-nonsense indictment that included video presentations with ATF field agents, victims of violent crimes and outraged members of congress who are determined to move a national investigation of “Operation Fast and Furious” going.

And Mr. LaPierre minced no words when addressing the administration’s contention that key leaders were unaware of the entire matter: “If Holder didn’t know,” LaPierre thundered, “then Holder’s gotta go.”
