Media claims about restaurant carry harken back to false predictions made during concealed carry debate

Uninformed, elitist, unenlightened and arrogant is no way to go through life, especially if you are a journalist.

Yet, Marilou Johanek seems to have reached the position of editorial columnist with The Toledo Blade despite her aforementioned limitations. Her recent editorial, “On gun in bars, state lawmakers defy logic, safety” – is a testament to the lower journalistic standards so prevalent among Ohio’s old media.

And yes, it also defies logic.

For those not familiar with the term old media, it describes newspapers, certain television news agencies, and other media organizations still run by the leftist media elite. Thomas Suddes from The Cleveland Plain Dealer and Joe Hallett from The Columbus Dispatch are the flag bearers for the old media. The entire Toledo Blade staff is seemingly made up of old media hacks as well.

A requirement of membership in the old media is to never say anything good about the National Rifle Association, or about gun owners. You also can’t acknowledge that groups like Buckeye Firearms Association exist, because it is an admission that gun rights are a mainstream issue with grassroots support, not just a special interest controlled by the NRA’s deep pockets.

But, the biggest failing of the old media, by far, is never admitting when they are wrong.

Restoration of Rights bill (HB54) scheduled for possible vote in Senate committee

The Senate Judiciary on Criminal Justice Committee, which is chaired by BFA “A+” -rated Sen. Tim Grendell (R), has scheduled a hearing on Tuesday, June 14 at 4:00 PM in the Senate Building’s North Hearing Room.

The committee, which has previously passed Sen. Jason Wilson’s (D) SB61 by a 8 – 1 vote, will hear testimony on an identical bill which has already passed in the House – HB54 – before a possible vote.

Sponsored by Rep. Ron Maag (R), HB54 will align Ohio law with federal statutes regarding the restoration of rights to Ohio firearms purchasers. HB54 passed in the House on May 11 by a 78-18 majority. If it clears the Senate committee and is passed by the full Senate, it will be sent to Governor John Kasich for his signature.

“Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”

While there is no definitive source for this quote (conflicting sources have it going all the way back to Napoleon), it clearly encompasses two things that are happening in the media coverage of the two Restaurant Carry bills pending in the Ohio General Assembly.

The malice is coming from the interest groups opposing the law. These groups are spreading deliberate misinformation as wide and as far as possible. The stupidity is coming from those who listen to them.

A good example of this is the media coverage of bartenders/bar owners under the impression they are responsible for verifying a patron is unarmed prior to serving the patron.

Huh?

Given the number of media outlets (article, editorial, editorial, editorial, article, article, etc.) covering this exact same topic, this “angle” is obviously a plant from some source opposed to the bill.

In three years of testimony (dating back to last session in the House and Senate committees) there has NEVER been a single bit of testimony or evidence offered suggesting that bartenders or bar owners are involved in enforcement of the proposed law. Yet clearly the idea that the property owner is somehow responsible, or liable, for enforcing the law has clearly been established via the talking points circulated by those opposed to the bill.

The very latest on the status of HB45/SB17 (Restaurant & Car Carry Rules Fix) & HB54/SB61 (Restoration of Rights)

We have received many emails regarding the status of concealed carry reform bills in Ohio. While HB45/SB17 (Restaurant & Car Carry Rules Fix legislation) and HB54/SB61 (Restoration of Rights) have all passed their respective chambers, House and Senate, they are not headed to Governor Kasich – yet. None of the bills have been signed into law and no changes are in effect for Ohio gun owners.

Before a bill goes to the Governor, it must pass both chambers of the General Assembly in identical form. Car carry and restaurant carry reform is contained in HB45 (House Bill 45) and also in SB17 (Senate Bill 17). These bills were identical when introduced. Each of these bills has gone through the committee hearing process and been passed by their respective chambers. They have both been assigned to committees in the opposite chamber from where they started. SB17 is now in the House and HB45 is now in the Senate. While still in the Senate, SB17 was amended to provide a way for someone who was convicted under current law to obtain relief if they would have been legal under the new law defined in SB17.

Because the bills were not identical when passed, they are not ready to move to the Governor. Additionally, even if they were identical, they would still not go to the Governor, because they are different bills. One is a House bill and one is a Senate bill. The same bill must pass both houses before it moves to the Governor.

One of these bills will become the vehicle that will be sent to Governor Kasich for his signature. Judging by recent comments to the press by Speaker Batchelder, it appears that SB17 will be the vehicle for the restaurant & car carry rules fixes.

Michigan Walgreens fires armed worker for “doing the right thing”

The Herald Palladium of southwest Michigan is reporting that a Benton Township, MI Walgreens has fired an employee who is being credited for saving the lives of several co-workers.

From the article:

A photograph of four children tucked in a thank-you card from a coworker reminds Jeremy Hoven he did the right thing.

But doing “the right thing” cost the night shift pharmacist his job at the Walgreens drugstore at Napier Avenue and M-139. The national pharmacy chain fired Hoven on Monday, eight days after he fired his handgun to foil an armed robbery and a potentially deadly hostage situation at the store.

“In my mind, I can look at myself in the mirror. I can lay my head down in bed and sleep. In my mind, I did what I had to do,” said the 36-year-old Twin Cities-area resident.

Hunters Reminded to Apply for Ohio’s Controlled Deer and Waterfowl Hunts

COLUMBUS, OH – Hunters wanting to participate in Ohio’s fall controlled deer and waterfowl hunts have until July 31 to submit permit applications for a random drawing according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. These special hunts are held on selected public areas to provide additional hunting opportunities.

New this year, all applicants, adults and youths, must possess a current hunting license in order to apply for a controlled hunt.

Hunters can save time and money by submitting their applications online at www.wildohio.com. The online application fee is $3 per hunt; online applicants can use VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Application fees are non-refundable.

Hunters will be selected at random from submitted applications and notified by U.S. mail in September. Only those selected will be notified. Applicants are encouraged to view the status of their application by visiting the Wild Ohio Customer Care Center at www.wildohio.com. Hunters visit this site to see if they were selected for a hunt; if chosen, they can then print their own permit.

Journalists for hire, ethics be damned: Anti-gun Joyce Foundation grant funds media “studies” pushing gun control

The Code of Ethics for the Society of Professional Journalists states that "Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know," and specifies that:

Journalists should:

— Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
— Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
— Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.

A series of articles written by Theodore Decker and published last week in The Columbus Dispatch ignores these principles, taking advocacy journalism to a level even the founders of the SPJ probably couldn't imagine when they adopted their first code of ethics in 1926.
