2012 Events and Goals for Buckeye Firearms Association

Recently, leaders of Buckeye Firearms Association met to discuss and plan the coming year. Concealed carry and firearms legislation, elections and endorsements, and fun events were all on the agenda. It’s going to be an exciting year.

Events

On the events front, we start with the Buckeye Bash on February 11. This event is a huge amount of work for us, but the items for auction continue to come in and I’m really looking forward to a fun evening.

Later this year, we will hold shooting events at Oxford, and one with Dave Spaulding similar to last year’s.

We will have Dave Grossman back this fall in the Cincinnati area to present his “Bullet-proofing the Mind” seminar.

We are also looking into hosting a shooting event between Columbus and Cleveland, and possibly a fall shoot that will be fun and something completely different.

Finally, Buckeye Firearms Foundation will again sponsor a youth shooting event.

Headline: NYPD, Feds Testing Gun-Scanning Technology, But Civil Liberties Groups Up In Arms

New York City’s CBS News affiliate is reporting on a new technology that could detect weapons on someone as they walk down the street.

From the article:

Police, along with the U.S. Department of Defense, are researching new technology in a scanner placed on police vehicles that can detect concealed weapons.

“You could use it at a specific event. You could use it at a shooting-prone location,” NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly told CBS 2’s Hazel Sanchez on Tuesday.

It’s called Terahertz Imaging Detection. It measures the energy radiating from a body up to 16 feet away, and can detect anything blocking it, like a gun.

“I think it’s good. People will be safer and it will be a safer environment,” Jessica Ramos said.

“I think it’s all about invading people’s lives more and more and more,” Antonio Gabriel added.

Police Commissioner Kelly said the scanner would only be used in reasonably suspicious circumstances and could cut down on the number of stop-and-frisks on the street.

But according to the article, even civil liberties groups known for ignoring the Second Amendment are raising a red flag.

NSSF Says 2012 Firearms Sales Outlook Promising after Record-setting Year

LAS VEGAS. — Many indicators, including a record-setting 2011, show the firearms industry continues to thrive in a down economy and that the potential exists for another strong sales year in 2012, reports the National Shooting Sports Foundation®, the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry.

NSSF® made the announcement today at the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade ShowSM (SHOT Show®), where exhibitors unveiled thousands of new products they hope will excite customers in 2012. The trade show, with an attendance of nearly 60,000, is the largest of its kind in the world.

The $4 billion firearms and ammunition industry stands apart from other industries that are struggling in the slow economy. Demand for guns has continued at a robust pace since late 2008. NSSF estimates the industry is responsible for approximately 180,000 jobs and has impact on the U.S. economy of $28 billion.

Indicators such as background-check statistics, firearms production and importation, firearm-retailer surveys and on-the-ground reports from retailers nationwide reveal that interest in firearm ownership is high. “More and more Americans are choosing to exercise their Second Amendment rights, and they are doing so in a safe and responsible manner,” said NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti.

“I would like to know how you started the association, because our state could use such an association.”
“We need an organization such as the BFA for WA. can you give me any pointers on starting such an organization?”
“Do you know if there is a similar organization to BFA in Michigan?”
“This a great site is there something like this for Connecticut people?”

As a volunteer for Buckeye Firearms Association, I help field some of the questions that supporters send to us via the website. As you can imagine, there is a wide variety, but the four quoted above have all arrived in the past two weeks. Over the past ten years as a volunteer for Buckeye Firearms Association, I have sent many replies to this question, but never this many back to back, so something is certainly stirring up supporters across the nation. As I answered each email, I finally started to realize that there is no one answer to what makes BFA successful. The only common theme was that we have managed to find a group of passionate supporters who are stupid enough to put the cause before everything else!

But what if you are not able to find others like yourself in your state, what then?

Let’s first look back at how Buckeye Firearms Association started and how we have grown.

Tripping over NYC’s Stupid Gun Laws

The closing days of 2011 brought a rash of collisions between otherwise upstanding citizens and New York City’s infamous gun laws. On December 16 Mark Meckler, a prominent California Tea Party leader, was arrested at LaGuardia Airport as he attempted to check luggage containing his unloaded, cased, handgun in accordance with TSA, FAA, and Delta Airline rules. Then on December 22, fourth-year medical student Meredith Graves was arrested at the 9/11 memorial when she asked a security guard where she could check her pistol in an attempt to comply with a “No Guns” sign. That case echoed a September case in which Indiana jeweler, Ryan Jerome, also tried to comply with a “No Guns” sign at the Empire State Building by asking a guard to hold his gun.

These are just the latest examples in a long stream of incidents that serve to demonstrate how gun laws snare the law abiding. Each case is unique, but virtually every case of an otherwise law-abiding citizens running afoul of draconian gun laws – in New York or elsewhere – falls into one of the following broad categories:

Top 15 Killers of Americans: Homicides are off the list, even though more people are carrying guns than ever before

CNN.com is reporting that while the leading killers of Americans continue to be non-infectious diseases like heart disease, strokes and lung diseases, one of the perpetual causes of death fell off the top 15 list this year:

Homicides.

From the article:

“Most of the changes were positive,” said Sherry Murphy, a statistician at the National Center of Health Statistics and one of the authors of the annual mortality report. “Homicides fell from among the 15 leading causes for the first time since 1965.”

Even as this news was breaking, news outlets across the country were reporting that sales of firearms had spiked to new highs during the Christmas shopping season. What’s more, thanks to passage of concealed carry laws in more states, and to improvements of those laws in states that have existing laws, more Americans are exercising their Second Amendment rights by legally carrying concealed handguns than at any time in our nation’s history.

If guns are tools of destruction designed only for killing, as those in the gun ban lobby claim, this good news could never have happened.
