Late-Season Deer Hunting Opportunities Available in Ohio
Muzzleloader season opens Jan. 4
COLUMBUS, OH – As the calendar turns to 2014, Ohio hunters have another opportunity to pursue white-tailed deer when muzzleloader season opens Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Deer-muzzleloader season runs through Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014.
“Muzzleloader season offers a great late-season opportunity for hunters to bag a white-tailed deer and enjoy Ohio’s outdoors with friends and family,” said Scott Zody, chief of the ODNR Division of Wildlife.
Ohio is one of the top white-tailed deer destinations in the United States. Ohio ranks No. 7 nationally for the number of trophy deer as compiled by the Boone and Crockett Club through 2011.
Hunters can pursue deer in Ohio with a muzzleloader or bow during this four-day season. Deer-archery season remains open through Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014. Hunters checked 21,555 deer during the 2013 four-day muzzleloader season.
Gun owners are like most other people – we just want a safe society
by Jeff Thomas
Like all of you, the tragic mass killing at a Connecticut school made my heart sink.
What people who seek gun control do not seem to realize is that we, as gun owners, want a safe community to live in and raise our families, a safe work environment, and safe schools for our children to learn.
We are not crazy people, as the anti-gun crowd portrays us. We are fathers, mothers, Scout leaders, doctors, pastors, teachers, blue collar workers and come from many other professions. Above all else, many of us are parents, first and foremost.
We share a common thread with almost all other Americans, whether gun owners or not, we value our family’s safety and our own. In fact, we probably value our family’s and our safety even more than most.
That’s why we’ve taken on the added responsibility of having a gun in our home for protection or becoming a licensed concealed carrier. Many of us recognize the importance of gun safety and the added responsibility by taking gun safety courses, additional training and practicing to improve our skills.
Armed Teachers: Over 600 Have Applied for Training
After the mass murder at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school, Buckeye Firearms Foundation announced that they would provide free firearms training to teachers and school administrative staff.
So far, the Armed Teacher Training Program has attracted more than 600 applicants from all parts of Ohio and several from other states, including Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia. More teachers inquire about the program every day.
“We knew this would be popular, but the response has exceeded our expectations,” said Jim Irvine, Chairman of the non-profit Buckeye Firearms Foundation. “People doubted if we would fill the first class. That happened in hours. This is something many in our schools have been asking about for a long time. We are already looking past the first class to future dates and locations to meet the demand.”

Meet the Brady Center’s newest “assault weapon”: Your upland/waterfowl/skeet/trap shooting shotgun
by Jeff Riley
Several years ago, published at BuckeyeFirearms.org, I detailed the Brady Center for the Prevention of Gun Violence’s call for banning “any ammunition that can penetrate ballistic armor” worn by law enforcement. This of course would ban almost any rifle ammunition used by big game and deer hunters in the United States. For years, gun-grabbers like the Brady Center have claimed that they aren’t after your hunting guns. As the old saying goes, however, “actions speak louder than words”. Not content to go after deer hunters rifles by calling them intermediate sniper rifles, now they have targeted your grandaddy’s bird gun.
On Sunday July 27, 2008 a disturbed man identified as Jim D. Adkisson entered the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Church in Knoxville, Tenn, firing three shots resulting in two deaths, wounding seven others before being tackled and held until the police arrived. The murder used a Remington Model 48 semi-automatic shotgun. This is what has the Brady Center trembling with fear and outrage, the dreaded semi-automatic (insert any model of firearm) “assault weapon.”
Never one to let any tragedy go by without capitalizing on it, they hurriedly published a news release falsely claiming that “The shooter used a Remington Model 48 that can fire three shells at a time.” This is not true as this would make it more akin to a machine gun, though even that can’t fire three cartridges at once. Apparently they confused ammunition capacity with number of shots fired per trigger pull. They have since corrected their error after numerous pro-gun bloggers noticed and ridiculed their mistake. They apparently are as clueless about hunting firearms as they are with military styled firearms.
They have posted two videos of these dangerous “assault weapons here”:
Knoxville shooter used semi-automatic shotgun
What is a semi-automatic shotgun
For a group that promises they aren’t after your bird gun, they sure do talk about them often. In the second video notice how they refer to an over and under shotgun as the “perhaps more familiar over/under your granddad might hunt ducks with.” See how the emphasis that with an over and under gun you have to reload after only two shots. Never mind that in the the church shooting the murderer only fired two shots into the crowd before discharging the third shot into the ceiling while being tackled by parishioners. So in this case the shooter could have used your grandpa’s over and under to inflict the same amount of damage.
Top 10 News Stories of 2012

On average, we publish two articles a day and 10 to 12 articles a week. Over the years, we have published well over 8,000 articles, covering elections, legislation, and all manner of events and information of interest to Second Amendment supporters.
It’s always interesting to look back over the year to see which articles captured the most interest. So here are the top 10 news items on our site from 2012.

Who Will Stand For Our Children? Voluntary Armed Parents in Schools
by Ron Borsch
INTRODUCTION AND DEFINING THE PROBLEM
It is important for us to first understand the “Rapid Mass Murder”© problem, the most common motivation of these active killers, how we can reduce the copycat effect, (http://www.lorencoleman.com/copycateffect/), as well as the number of these incidents and then look at the “Final Option” of armed intervention. We hope to at least initiate all that within this article. What qualifications do we possess to be an authority on the subject?
Our post-grad, non-profit regional police training academy has specialized in tactically training 1st responding officers and deputies since the year 2000. We have been so fortunate to have our research and statistics gain attention on the national and international law enforcement scene. Our premier “Tactical 1st Responder” course, emphasizing the “Single Officer’s Lifesaving Others” 70 % successful response as a countermeasure to the active killer has attracted officers from eight different states to Bedford, Ohio. Our free law enforcement only newsletter goes out to officers in a few dozen states and several countries.
Our research protocol is limited to “Rapid Mass Murder”©, (RMM) and certain attempts at RMM. Our definition is “Within 20 minutes, four or more murdered at the same time and public place”©
The term active killer is self defining, but we further define it as “One who commits Rapid Mass Murder”©, so there is no confusion with the law-abiding recreational practice of being an active shooter. Pre-Columbine High School in 1999 back to 1975, we averaged +/- one RMM a year. Post-Columbine, we averaged +/- four a year up to 2010. In 2011, we broke the record with eight RMM in one year, and in November 2012, that record was again broken with nine. December, tied at 3rd as the most dangerous month, had our 10th RMM with half the month remaining as this is written.
Aborts, or successful stoppages of RMM only occur in slightly more than half, (+/- 51%) of RMM incidents. In two thirds of these aborts the killing is stopped by citizens, initiated by a single citizen in 8 out of 10 incidents. Remarkably, in +/- two thirds of these citizen aborts, the actors are unarmed. Barehanded against a firearm is certainly a steep and very dangerous learning curve! Law enforcement, handicapped by time, distance, delayed notification and often faulty belief systems about RMM, handle the other third. The law enforcement successes were by a “Single Officer’s Lifesaving Others”© in 7 out of 10 RMM incidents.
Is it possible to improve upon the overall dismal rate of only half of RMM incidents being aborted? Certainly! We must have serious skilled people in place properly equipped to protect the children. The top three most repeated targets of the copycat active killer, (Schools, Universities and Churches combined comprise +/- two thirds of the active killer targets), are also the most commonly designated “Gun-Free” zones. Is there a logical cause and effect connection here? Yes, of course there is!
OOPS: In rant calling for magazine ban, NBC’s David Gregory demonstrates why gun control laws don’t work
by Chad D. Baus
In the days since the latest horrific mass murder in a “no-guns” zone, the media onslaught has been relentless.
Never mind that Connecticut already has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, including an “assault” weapons ban – the media say more such laws are what is needed. Never mind that guns were banned in the school where the attack took place – the media say more bans are what is needed.
Trespassing, breaking and entering in the school, murdering children…all are illegal, yet the incessant drumbeat heard in the media is that making something illegal will prevent it from happening.
Last Sunday, during an interview with the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre, NBC’s David Gregory tried to ratchet up support for a ban on standard capacity rifle magazines with a little game of “show and tell.” Gregory didn’t just want to talk about the “evil” magazine, he wanted to show his audience what one looks like.
And so, despite the fact that such magazines are illegal in Washington D.C., where “Meet the Press” is recorded, David Gregory did what criminals always do – he simply ignored the city’s gun control law and did what he wanted.
