Searching for Judas: The dangers of being in the gun business today

It’s official. The Dept. of Homeland Security, under Janet Napolitano, has put forth a “Personal Defense Weapon Solicitation” to purchase 7000 rifles chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO. (source: www.fbo.gov) This is an official solicitation that they are accepting bids from manufactures/suppliers. While that story in and of itself is a bit incredulous given the current administration’s stance against so-called “assault weapons”, the big question on my mind is, will any U.S. firearms manufacturer dare to step up and bid on this contract?

This query is particularly poignant as orders for Stoner-based rifles are back-ordered months or even years.

We all should be aware the Information Super-Highway is most certainly a double-edged sword. Valuable information can be disseminated – immediately. Genuine news stories, not pap, are available to anyone with mobile device. No need to wait for a newspaper or magazine.

The biggest advantage the Internet provides to modern patriots is that it has broken the stranglehold that “old media” had on what was reported (or not) to the masses.

That’s the good news.

Op-Ed: Let’s Have That Conversation About Guns

For once I agree with liberals. It’s high time to have a conversation about guns. Let’s start with the problem that there are far too few guns on our streets.

Wait, we can’t have that conversation. In fact, we’re not supposed to have what people might commonly describe as a “conversation” at all. We’re supposed to shut-up and listen as liberals, barely masking their unseemly delight at the opportunity, try to pin the murder rampage of one degenerate creep on millions of law-abiding Americans who did nothing wrong. The conversation is then supposed to end with us waiving our fundamental right to self-defense.

Because that is what the goal is a total ban on the private ownership of firearms. There’s always another ”common sense” gun law which fails because it is targeted at law-abiding citizens and not criminals, thereby inviting another round of onerous new restrictions until finally no citizen is keeping or bearing anything more than a dull butter knife.

Well, almost no citizens. “Gun control” means all guns under the control of the government and available only to it and, of course, to politically connected cronies. Gun-grabbing poser Michael Bloomberg is going to be surrounded by enough fire power to remake the movie Heat. He’s always going to be protected. The purpose of gun control is to ensure that we aren’t.

So let’s have that conversation, and let’s lay the cards on the table. Modern firearms (which really aren’t that modern) are highly effective weapons in the hands of an evil little freak who gets off shooting children. They are also highly effective weapons in my hands when defending my children from evil little freaks.

Liberals ask why I need these weapons. The answer is simple. I’m going to be as well-armed or better armed than the threat. Period.

Here’s the fact bad people are going to have guns. And if you’ve ever smoked a joint, you are disqualified from arguing that prohibition works.

Fight now with your voice or fight later with guns

The country is arguably at the most crucial point in our history when it comes to the Second Amendment and the outcome will affect your liberty and possibly your life.

A powerful statement? I challenge anyone to prove me wrong.

The country has been crippled by more than seven years of economic hardship, more than a decade of citizens losing liberties, and now the president and his operatives want to take away our guns. And make no mistake, they do want to take away our guns – not just AR-15s or magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

The Vice President already has showed this week that he and the administration do not believe in democracy. Hearings for a presidential “task force” have been nothing more than a staged production. There has been no debate on how to prevent school shootings or other forms of mass killings, only plans laid out to take advantage of the recent tragedies as the President, Vice President and their henchmen stand on the graves of the children of Sandy Hook calling for a total destruction of the Second Amendment.

This is where we, law-abiding, freedom-loving gun owners, must take a stand. We must demand that they stop using the blood of dead children to promote an agenda they held in abeyance, waiting for an incident such as Sandy Hook to jump.

BOOK REVIEW: Poachers Were My Prey

I received the new book, “Poachers Were My Prey,” as a Christmas present. The book is a compilation of undercover investigations by the Division of Wildlife and Officer R. T. Stewart as told to outdoor writer Chip Gross. The story can be told now that Stewart has retired from the Division of Wildlife and the cases are long since closed. Gross is also retired from the Division of Wildlife.

Stewart was involved with the very first undercover operation conducted by the Division of Wildlife, Operation Clanbake. The book details not only the success of the operations but the close calls that almost revealed the identity of the officers. It describes the living conditions and environment encountered in dealing with the lawless poachers. Saying that those conditions were gritty and disgusting is a gross understatement.

I remember some of the operations since, as an outdoor writer, I received various press releases on the activity. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to view some of the undercover video. I’ve seen some takes of the undercover video from Operation Redbud. One night the poachers took a rifle but when they opened the door of the van to shoot a spotlighted deer, they only had one cartridge. The poacher proceeded to drop it out the door onto the running board. The cursing would curl your hair. They managed to retrieve the cartridge and still kill the deer. This story is related in detail in the book. I am amazed the early hidden video or audio equipment wasn’t discovered by the poachers. Even later when the equipment and techniques were much improved, I am still amazed that Stewart wasn’t detected.

Rep. Patmon’s HB31 (Mandatory “Safe” Storage of Firearms) is based on several anti-gun myths

Editor’s Note: The following article was originally published in response to the introduction of Rep. Bill Patmon’s HB563 in the 129th General Assembly. That bill was never considered, and it died at the end of the session. Patmon has reintroduced the bill, this time as HB31.

Rep. Bill Patmon (D-10) has introduced HB563HB31, gun control legislation that would “prohibit any person from storing or leaving a firearm in the person’s residence unless the firearm is secured in safe storage or rendered inoperable by a tamper-resistant lock or other safety device if the person knows or reasonably should know that a minor is able to gain access to the firearm and to provide criminal penalties if a minor gains unauthorized access to a firearm not so stored or rendered inoperable.”

Unfortunately, this bill, filed as a knee-jerk reaction to a recent tragedy in which a 3 year-old child in Ohio found a gun and died from a self-inflicted wound a mentally-ill young man stole his mother’s firearms and engaged in a spree killing at a Connecticut elementary school, is based on a number of myths, and would be impotent at solving the problems it seeks to address.

Skeet-Gate: Some Constructive Advice for the President

We here at NSSF were somewhat bemused over the controversy that sprang from President Obama’s assertion that he shot skeet on a regular basis, and the second wave of commentary that attended the White House release of a photo to prove it. There’s a reason we’re citing the New York Times coverage in the link above — we’ll get to that later.

The assertion came as no surprise to us, because NSSF sponsored and oversaw the renovation of the skeet field at Camp David. We provided one of the industry’s top facilities consultants, and donated tens of thousands of dollars of machinery, consulting and oversight to build the regulation field. We provided countless hours of shotgun and safety instruction as well. We were honored to provide this service for the office of the Presidency, and our investment appears to be paying off by recruiting new shooters. Welcome, Mr. President.

In the same vein, we can offer the president some constructive advice on his shooting. Mr. President, try leaning a little further forward into the shot to better manage recoil. Keep your feet about shoulder width apart, and put more weight on your leading foot. You appear to be shooting a gun with “neutral cast,” to wit, a straight stock. Since you’re shooting left-handed, you may want to look into a different stock cast to better accommodate you. And if you’re going to get a custom gun, make sure they measure your length of pull first. Proper gun fit makes an enormous difference in accuracy, and thus in your enjoyment of the sport.

You may also want to try out the semiautomatic shotguns that another one of our member companies donated to Camp David. These too come in left-handed versions, which eject the spent casing to your left, instead of to the right as is customary. No matter which way the case ejects when you shoot the semiautomatic, you’ll notice that the gun still only shoots one round per pull of the trigger, just like the over/under you’re shooting in the picture.

In fact, the semiautomatic shotguns are functionally identical to all the semiautomatic firearms that Senator Dianne Feinstein has proposed to ban in her sweeping new legislation, S. 150. We feel like we have to keep repeating that fact, because many of the media voices that consider themselves learned scholars on gun policy don’t even know the difference between a rifle and a shotgun, for heaven’s sake. Note that The New York Times article has a correction at the bottom of the page, because it originally said that you were shooting a rifle in the picture — a mistake quickly repeated by dozens of other media outlets. Many of these same media outlets have been quick to editorialize about which guns Americans should and should not be allowed to own, when apparently they wouldn’t know a rifle or a shotgun from a barn door. Go figure.

WHIO-TV’s excuse for quoting rapist-for-gun-control fizzles as Sheriff Plummer reveals he is NOT a Adam Project board member

Last week, we broke the news on the fact that Dayton anti-gun protestor Jerome McCorry (AKA Jerome Jordan), who had staged a small protest outside Bill Goodman’s Gun & Knife Show and received generous media attention, is also a convicted rapist. We noted that Anti-Gun-Protestor Jerome McCorry is seen on WHIO wearing a jacket and identified in the on-screen graphic as the President of The Adam Project. The Adam Project’s website lists its address as 1426 Home Ave., Dayton – the same address as Rapist-and-Convicted-Felon Jerome McCorry.

We also pointed out that, despite this fact, media outlets like WHIO-TV (CBS Dayton), the Dayton Daily News and WKEF (ABC Dayton) not only failed to report the fact that McCorry is a sex offender in their coverage of the protest, but that they have repeatedly failed to do so in past coverage about McCorry.

The article quickly went viral, receiving approximately 40,000 reads in the first 48 hours, and continues to receive strong traffic.

Many have been asking Dayton media outlets why they have given legitimacy to this rapist’s calls for potential crime victims to be disarmed. While neither WKEF nor the Dayton Daily News have responded, Dayton blogger “Domestic Debacle” did receive a response from WHIO, in which they admitted that they were aware of McCorry’s status as a sex offender, yet failed to report it.

According to WHIO, they didn’t report on McCorry’s “controversial” status as a convicted rapist because, these days, his message is one of “community harmony through peace and non-violence.” WHIO also noted that the sex offender “has the endorsement of respected law enforcement leaders.”

A reader of the Dayton blog “Domestic Debacle,” and self-described poster on Buckeye Firearms Association’s forums, decided to try and find out what “respected law enforcement leaders'” “endorsement” WHIO was hiding behind. He took a look at The Adam Project’s Facebook page, and noted that both Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer and his Chief Deputy, Scot Landis are listed as board members.

We, of course, reported on the listing, asking why these men would be serving on the board of an anti-gun organization that is headed by a convicted rapist. Several hours later, we had our answer – THEY AREN’T.
