Polls: 63% of Americans say stricter gun control laws won’t prevent criminals from getting guns; Only 40% believe UBC necessary
by Chad D. Baus
A recent poll by Reason-Rupe found that, when it comes to keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, 63 percent of Americans remain unconvinced that tighter restrictions on buying and owning guns will be effective.
From the article:
Seven in ten Republicans say stricter gun regulations would not be effective while just 26 percent say they would be effective. Democrats are more divided on the issue. While typically supportive of increased gun control, more than half (53 percent) say tighter restrictions on buying and owning guns would not prevent criminals from obtaining the weapons while 44 percent say they would prevent criminals from getting guns. Two-thirds of independents don’t expect tighter restrictions to be effective while 30 percent think they will.
While it’s good news that majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents all believe additional gun control laws would be ineffective at preventing criminals from gaining access, the poll suggests that the nation’s colleges and universities might want to offer more logic classes to their students.

PETA to Mauling Victim: Grin and Bear It
On December 13th, PETA “Special Projects” Division Manager Alicia Woempner lived up to the group’s reputation for bizarre extremism when she sent a letter scolding 18-year-old hunter and bear mauling victim Camille Bomboy. In the dispatch, Woempner urges the recovering teen to “reflect on [the] incident” and “abandon hunting.”
Earlier in the week, Bomboy had been the victim of a vicious bear attack while hunting on her family’s farm, suffering bites to her arms and a severe injury that almost resulted in the loss of an ear. The attack was only halted when Bomboy’s stepfather frightened off the bear by firing a rifle.
Throughout the letter, Woempner equates human beings with animals, as is characteristic of PETA. Woempner writes, “This seems to be a good opportunity to put yourself in the place of the individuals you and the rest of your hunting party were trying to kill.” (Emphasis added.) Woempner continues the lecture: “Now that you’ve experienced the horror of an attack – although this one was in self-defense – we hope you will choose to enjoy nature in only nonviolent ways.”
Dozens of Ohio Schools Change Gun Policies to Defend Students
by Jason Hart
Dozens of school districts across Ohio made some allowance for handguns on campus in the year following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, a recent Buckeye Firearms Foundation (BFF) survey found.
“There are at least 20 different school districts in Ohio that have authorized individuals such as teachers, administrators and parents to carry firearms in schools,” BFF President Jim Irvine wrote on December 11.
“The list includes rural, urban and suburban schools. It includes public, private and parochial schools. It covers small, medium and large schools and all grade levels,” Irvine explained. “In short, it is a cross section of Ohio, and the United States of America.”
