Anti-Hunting Representative Assumes Pivotal Committee Chairmanship in Congress

Sportsmen Dismayed by Overthrow of Congressman John Dingell

The United States Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) expresses its dismay today over the news that U.S. Representative Henry Waxman (D- CA) toppled Representative John Dingell (D- MI) as Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Rep. Dingell has been a tireless champion of sportsmen issues for decades, while Rep. Waxman has a long history of supporting the causes of extremist animal rights and anti-firearm groups. Given the recent call by President-elect Barack Obama for a broad and bipartisan approach to governing, this action raises serious doubts in the eyes of sportsmen.

“Rep. Dingell understood and cared about sportsmen and their devotion to conservation,” said USSA Vice President of Government Affairs, Rob Sexton. “On the other hand, Rep. Waxman, an environmental activist, has consistently earned a 100 percent rating from the leading anti-hunting group in the country, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), which has sought to use the Endangered Species Act to stop hunting.”

When seconds count, police are only minutes away. It’s an old cliché, but every day we have a “news” story that illustrates it’s truth.

What if a school full of children are being murdered by a killer with a gun? What if police were there, but they waited outside? What if your child died as a result? For too many parents, these are not “what if” questions. They are living with the grief. With that knowledge, why would you just wait and hope it does not happen to your child? Love requires that you get involved on your child’s behalf.

NRA’s Wayne LaPierre visits Ohio; Urges gun owners to remain vigilant

The Ashland Times-Gazette is reporting that National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre told a crowd at Ashland University last week that historic victories for gun rights occurred in 2008, but the fight for firearm freedoms must continue to preserve the Second Amendment.

Speaking at the Major Issues Lecture Series at the John M. Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs, LaPierre told listeners that despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a handgun ban in Washington D.C., which affirmed the individual right to keep and bear arms, there is a battle for firearms ownership in America. He said an “elite ruling class” of anti-gun politicians has “declared war on our individual rights” by trying to restrict Americans’ ability to keep and bear arms.

I’m not sure students are still taught about American patriot Paul Revere’s famous “Midnight Ride” in our public school system, but I am sure about this –

“The British are coming (again)!”

And just like the British army occupying Boston began confiscating the inhabitants’ firearms in 1774, the new occupiers have similar goals in mind.

At an Ohio campaign rally in October, 2008, candidate Barack Obama promised Americans “I will not take your rifle away.” But less than 48 hours after he was elected, and before all the votes were counted, President-elect Obama immediately announced plans to do just that.

Firearms Industry Lauds Development of Electronic Form 4473 at ATF Press Conference

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Speaking at a press conference Wednesday at the Maryland Small Arms Range in Upper Marlboro, Md., the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced the launch of an electronic Form 4473 — the Firearms Transaction Record which must be filled out any time a person buys a firearm from a licensed firearms dealer. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) — the trade association for the firearms industry — hailed the development of the electronic document.

Jacques Jones, a long-time friend and former BFA leader, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2008.

Jacques was a lifelong gun rights supporter and instrumental leader in the fight to pass concealed carry legislation in Ohio.

Jacques was also a renowned SCUBA Rescue Diver and Instructor, NRA Certified Pistol Instructor, Concealed Carry Instructor, former member of the Akron University Rifle Team, and a close friend to all at Buckeye Firearms Association.

He will be missed.

Ignorance is Bliss…Until the Pain Begins

The reality of the November 4 elections is beginning to settle in and the more people learn about the choices they’ve made, the more concerned they become. It turns out that the McCain campaign’s “Celebrity” commercial was spot-on; Barack Obama was famous for being famous and the masses failed to look behind the curtain or into the promises. What Alan Korwin calls the “lame-stream media” was complicit in the charade as they fawned over Obama and the Democrats while trashing McCain, Palin, the Republicans in Congress, and George W. Bush. The two major parties were also complicit as they have locked up the election process and locked out many highly qualified and worthwhile candidates and ideas. But in the end, it all comes down to the American people and how much attention and consideration they are giving to the health of The Republic.

The simple fact is that the vast majority of citizens pay absolutely no attention to matters of politics and a good percentage of the rest pay only superficial attention. Gunowners turn out for elections at about the same rate as non-gunowners and often have little or no idea about the candidates’ positions on firearms issues. While millions of serious “gun-people” buy Shotgun News and other gun publications almost religiously, many of them never even look at the “political columns” like this one and choose to remain oblivious to the erosion of their rights and the threats certain political philosophies represent.

A documentary filmmaker, exploring the impact of media coverage of the campaigns, took his cameras to a polling place to get a feel for just what Obama voters had learned from the media leading up to the elections. His findings were disturbing. He then commissioned the Zogby polling organization to conduct a poll of Obama voters to determine whether the sample of voters interviewed were representative of the broader, Obama voter universe. The results of this national, scientific poll were nothing short of staggering.

Judging by our email in box, there are at least a few gun owners who refused to believe the warnings Second Amendment defenders like the National Rifle Association and Buckeye Firearms Association offered about what a Barack Obama administration would mean for gun control.

If they didn’t believe the evidence provided by his record, and didn’t believe an organization with a 137 year record of support for gun rights, maybe they’ll believe a woman with a 23 year history of support for the most radical gun control efforts in our nation’s history.

In a letter to supporters, Sarah Brady praises Obama’s choice for Chief of Staff, and calls the NRA F-rated Rahm Emanuel a “good friend” of gun control who served as her “go-to guy” in the White House during efforts to pass the Clinton Gun Ban.

Buckeye Firearms Assoc. endorsees to hold majority of leadership positions among House Democrats

Thanks in large part to having run so many pro-gun candidates in key districts, Democrats will hold a slim majority next year in the Ohio House.

The House Democratic caucus has chosen Rep. Armond Budish (D-08) as the next House speaker. He will replace Republican Jon Husted when the 128th General Assembly is formed in January.

It is an encouraging sign that, despite a change in party leadership, a majority of House leadership positions in the chamber will continue to be held by Buckeye Firearms Association endorsees.

Obama continues to build anti-gun rights team: Nominates Eric Holder as AG

The nomination of Eric Holder for the post of attorney general of the United States sends an “alarming signal” to gun owners about how the Barack Obama administration will view individual gun rights, as affirmed this year by the Supreme Court, the Second Amendment Foundation said today.

“Eric Holder signed an amicus brief in the Heller case that supported the District of Columbia’s handgun ban, and also argued that the Second Amendment does not protect an individual right,” noted SAF founder Alan Gottlieb. “He has supported national handgun licensing and mandatory trigger locks. As deputy attorney general under Janet Reno, he lobbied Congress to pass legislation that would have curtailed legitimate gun shows.

“This is not the record of a man who will come to office as the nation’s top law enforcement officer with the rights and concerns of gun owners in mind,” he observed.
