Why America’s gun owners are justifiably up in arms

From the prospect of an incoming president and vice president with decidedly anti-gun-rights voting records, to a liberal West Coast mayor determined to ban firearms by “executive order” without benefit of city council or legislative review, American gun owners have good reason to doubt the sincerity of Liberal Democrats now in control of Congress and soon to control the Oval Office, who claim to support firearm civil rights.

Far too many red flags are being waved for gun owners to take a benign posture just six months after a landmark Supreme Court ruling confirmed what they had known all along; that the Second Amendment affirms and protects a fundamental individual civil right to keep and bear arms.

U.S. Interior Dept. rules in favor of concealed carry in national parks

BELLEVUE, WA – Today’s announcement that the Interior Department has amended its rules and will henceforth allow licensed concealed carry in national parks was hailed as a victory for the Second Amendment by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

“No longer will American citizens be required to leave their right of self-defense at the gates of a national park,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “This common-sense change in regulations reflects not only changes in the laws of 48 states, but more importantly the Supreme Court’s ruling in June that upheld the individual right to keep and bear arms that is protected by the Second Amendment.”

Ohio Sportsmen Should Say No to “Puppy Mill” and Vaccine Bills

Ohio hunters should be on high alert. The state House of Representatives, which is under intense pressure from animal rights groups and the media, is considering passing legislation creating a new state agency to regulate dog breeders and kennel owners.

The proponents claim House Bill 223 would only affect “puppy mills” but instead it would eliminate many sporting dog kennels through a tidal wave of fees, fines and red tape while instituting a statewide enforcement authority. The bill treats sporting dog kennels and abusive commercial breeders with the same iron fist. For a complete analysis of HB223 click here.

Additionally, the Senate is debating HB446, which would require that all rabies vaccines be administered by a veterinarian. This would drastically increase the cost of vaccinating dogs, by mandating additional vet visits. HB446 would also increase the minimum fees for registering dogs and kennels by 1000%.

These efforts are supported by the Humane Society of the United States and other animal rights/anti-hunting organizations. They are telling members of the legislature to pass these bills in December, just before newly elected legislators take office. This time period is referred to as lame duck session. Usually only emergency bills are passed during this timeframe.

Legislators must hear from Ohio sportsmen today regarding HB223 and HB446. They must be told how devastating these bills are and that there is no good reason to ram them through during lame duck session. These bills deserve a full and open debate prior to their passage.

HB450 (Armed Services 18-21 gun rights restoration) scheduled for third hearing & possible vote in Senate committee

The Senate Judiciary on Criminal Justice Committee, chaired by Sen. Tim Grendell (R-18), will hear proponent, opponent and interested party testimony on Rep. Bruce Goodwin’s HB450, legislation that would restore gun rights to members of the armed services or the Ohio National Guard who are between the ages of 18 and 21, on Wednesday, December 10 at 9:00 a.m. in the Senate Building’s North Hearing Room (a tentative hearing has also been planned for the same time and location on Dec. 11, if needed).

The Chairman has indicated that a substitute bill may be offered, and that the bill may receive a vote out of committee!

Lessons from Black Friday in Mumbai

Most Americans transfixed by Black Friday sales at the local discount megamart completely ignored the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. Sadly, it’s learning from such tragedies that might save your life someday.

For those not familiar with the story, terrorists fighting for an independent Kashmir stormed several high profile hotels and other locations in Mumbai, resulting in at least 200 deaths as of this writing. Like the bombings that took place around the world prior to 9/11, Americans see the carnage in Mumbai as largely another issue they can ignore. As they see it, attacks similar to what happen in places like India don’t happen here.

It’s amazing that post-9/11 that people have their head buried so deeply in the sand, or should we say they are so deeply buried in the American societal ways, that getting a deal on a plasma TV is more important than taking a few minutes to learn the possible tactics of our next attackers.

The tactics used by the terrorists in India are similar to those found in Al Qaeda manuals in Iraq – chillingly among the documents found during intelligence sweeps included plans for America’s schools.

Al Qaeda learned from their mistakes in planning and carrying out the 9/11 attacks, and there is no doubt they might regret the attack. After all, since they chose to punch us in the face their fortunes have turned a little sour. Osama bin Laden can’t stick his head up out of a cave somewhere in Pakistan and his terror network is in shambles. America faces other security risks yet nearly 8 years later, there hasn’t been another large scale attack.

The enemy continues to plan that next big attack and it might just mirror what happened in Mumbai. Recognizing the telltale signs of such an attack is vital to how people will survive when it happens, because it will.

White-tailed Deer Hunters Score on Opening Day of Gun Season

Statewide harvest up 70 percent from 2007

COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio hunters were on the mark for opening day of the 2008 deer-gun season. Hunters took 33,034 white-tailed deer on Monday, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The deer-gun season remains open through Sunday, December 7, and then reopens for two days on Saturday and Sunday, December 20-21.

The preliminary figures from deer check stations throughout the state show a significant increase from last year’s opening day total of 19,391. Monday’s weather was breezy with intermittent rain or snow across the state, a stark contrast to opening day 2007 when hunters were hampered by heavy rain.

Counties reporting the highest numbers of deer checked on Monday included Tuscarawas-1,821, Washington-1,456, Coshocton-1,307, Harrison-1,286, Guernsey-1,202, Licking-1,134, Ashtabula-1,089, Holmes-1,088, Knox-954, and Athens-828.

Give Credit When It’s Due

One need only peruse media watchdog sites like News Busters to see the scope and depth of bias among the mainstream media. Whether discussing political parties, corporations, or gun rights, you can generally count on one-sided promotion of their agenda (Republicans, business, and guns all ‘bad’).

Such bias deserves to be exposed, because it signifies the failure of the journalistic institution to faithfully perform its public duty to tell people the truth, so that informed citizens may make better choices when voting, and hold elected officials accountable regardless of political affiliation.

But that is for another column. Today, I write not to censure a journalist, but to praise one. It is most encouraging when one finds an example of professional journalism.
