Hunters Take 24,078 White-tailed Deer During Statewide Muzzleloader Season

A 17% increase over last year

Hunters took 24,078 deer during Ohio’s four-day muzzleloader season, January 9-12, with Tuscarawas County again leading the state with 1,345 deer checked. In 2008, a preliminary total of 20,659 deer was taken during muzzleloader season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
Counties reporting the highest number of deer checked during the muzzleloader season included: Tuscarawas-1,345; Harrison-1,025; Guernsey-1,000; Washington-937; Athens-816; Belmont-735; Coshocton-692; Licking-679; Meigs-645; and Jefferson-616.

A total of 251,826 deer have been harvested so far this season when combining the gun seasons, early and statewide muzzleloader seasons, and the first nine weeks of the archery season. Hunters took a total of 252,017 deer during all of last year’s hunting seasons.

HSUS Takes Aim at National Columnist for Exposing Agenda

Wayne Pacelle, the president and CEO, of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) decided he needed to hit back after a recent column in the Washington Times truthfully outlined the reality of HSUS’ mission.

Gene Mueller, a longtime columnist with the Washington Times recently picked up on a previous blog post where I wrote about Rush Limbaugh winning the Field & Stream online sportsmen’s “villain” contest. It was a fair piece that made clear that HSUS’ main mission is to raise money to, and I quote, “lobby against hunting and/or medical research in which animals are used to test medication and surgical procedures.”

In a December 29 letter to the editor at the Washington Times, Pacelle goes off and attempts to defend the HSUS’ anti-hunting agenda by stating:

Earlier today, Buckeye Firearms Association Central Ohio Chair Linda Walker offered proponent testimony on HB203, which seeks to “allow a concealed carry licensee who is not consuming liquor and is not under the influence to carry a concealed handgun in a retail food establishment or food service operation with any class liquor permit issued for the location” before the House Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security.

Gun-control advocates play fast and loose

More than 900 black males between the ages of 14 and 17 killed somebody in 2007. Should we be scared of young black guys?

Of course not. There are roughly 3 million black males in that age group in the United States. It would be horribly unfair to toss around the first statistic without mentioning the second; doing so would be misleading, if not malicious.

Now consider this statistic: Concealed handgun permit holders have killed 107 people since 2007. That news, from the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., sounds pretty bad – until you put it in context. How many Americans have been issued a permit to carry a concealed weapon?

The Violence Policy Center doesn’t say.

Ohio Gun Collectors Assoc. makes generous donation to Buckeye Firearms Foundation

Last year Buckeye Firearms Association made a point of working with other groups where specific goals overlapped. One such relationship has been with the Ohio Gun Collectors Association (OGCA). OGCA has been tremendously supportive and Buckeye Firearms leaders were on hand to accept a $2,500 check from them at their show last November.

Buckeye Firearms Foundation has filed an Amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in the McDonald v. Chicago case. The case is intended to apply the protections of the Second Amendment right to bear arms against the States and cities.

Filing such a brief is an expensive endeavor, but the cost of not getting involved is far greater. We can both defray the cost and strengthen our hand when we work with other good groups, and OGCA is one of the best.

John Kasich names former Buckeye Firearms Association endorsee Mary Taylor as running mate

Republican gubernatorial candidate John Kasich utilized Twitter on Thursday to announce his choice of former multiple-time Buckeye Firearms Association endorsee and current State Auditor Mary Taylor as his running mate, confirming a leak reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Tuesday.

Taylor earned the endorsement of Buckeye Firearms Association in her successful 2006 campaign for Auditor of State, having overcome a serious trend against Republicans in Ohio.

Previously, she had served two terms in the Ohio House of Representatives, where her pro-gun record – both in terms of votes and behind-the-scenes support – was impeccable.

We need YOU to help put Annie Oakley in Statuary Hall

If you have ever gone to the United States Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., then no doubt you have walked through Statuary Hall, where each state has two statues depicting someone from its history.

One of these statues is slated to be replaced. The Ohio Legislature has been tasked to find the replacement, with the help of all Ohioans. We need YOU to help us put famous Ohio sharpshooter Annie Oakley in Statuary Hall.

According to committee chairman Senator Mark Wagoner, “The National Statuary Collection Study Committee was created as part of Senate Bill 277 of the 126th General Assembly to select a replacement statue to be displayed at the United States Capitol as part of the National Statuary Hall Collection.”

HB203 (Restaurant Carry) scheduled for proponent testimony in House committee

House Bill 203, which seeks to “allow a concealed carry licensee who is not consuming liquor and is not under the influence to carry a concealed handgun in a retail food establishment or food service operation with any class liquor permit issued for the location,” has been added to the House Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security agenda for sponsor testimony, Tuesday, January 19 at 3:00pm in Statehouse Hearing Room 122.

The purpose for Tuesday’s hearing is so that the committee may hear testimony on HB203 from the legislation’s supporters.

Buckeye Firearms Association will offer testimony in support of this legislation.
