Woman says she’s alive because she bought a gun rather than counting on a protection order to stop her violent ex

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that a Columbus woman is alive today because she took steps to protect herself in the event that her estranged boyfriend chose to ignore the protection order that was supposed to keep him away from her and their 7-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter.

From the article:

The woman’s hands were shaking, but she spoke in a calm voice as she stood outside the Far East Side apartment where 27-year-old Quentin L. Walker was shot and killed early yesterday.

“I’m the one who this happened to,” she said, identifying herself only as Ashley.

She said that Walker, her estranged boyfriend and the father of her two children, broke into her apartment in the middle of the night and came at her with a crowbar in his hand.

She shot and killed him, using the gun she’d bought this year, Ashley said. She had feared that the protection order that was supposed to keep him away from her and their 7-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter would not be enough.

The Term ‘Modern Sporting Rifle’

When pro-gun blogger Eric at Gunmart Blog wrote that he does not care for the term “modern sporting rifle,” which NSSF has been promoting to describe AR-platform rifles for the last two years, well, he’s entitled to his opinion. However, when he wrote “perhaps we should just embrace the term ‘assault rifle,’ then he becomes an accessory to those who want to ban these sporting firearms. To underscore this point, the vehemently anti-gun Violence Policy Center promoted Eric’s post on its social media outlets. Good exposure for a blogger; wrong audience, though.

And that’s the problem. Whenever someone in the gun-owning community mistakenly calls an AR-platform rifle an assault rifle or an automatic rifle, they are assisting anti-gun organizations and lawmakers who are eager to introduce legislation to restrict ownership of these and potentially other semiautomatic firearms. (By the way, the AR stands for ArmaLite, the company that developed the rifle in the 1950s, and not assault rifle or automatic rifle. See other MSR facts.)

Incorrect labeling of AR-style firearms by gun owners, not to mention anti-gun groups, is what caused NSSF to launch its Modern Sporting Rifle education program. NSSF has driven a broad-based and expensive communications effort to encourage gun owners to better understand AR-platform rifles–that they are not assault rifles, that they are semiautomatics firing one round with each pull of the trigger just like other semiautomatic sporting rifles and that they are in common use for target shooting and hunting. Additionally and importantly, we’ve helped those who reacted to the MSR’s military look to understand how for more than a century civilian sporting rifles have evolved from their military predecessors–such as the bolt-action Springfield 30-06 after World War I and semiautomatic rifle after World War II. The MSR follows in that tradition.

Public Support for Hunting Remains Strong, NSSF Study Shows

94 Percent Agree with ‘Right to Hunt’

As sportsmen and sportswomen celebrated the 40th annual National Hunting & Fishing Day last Saturday, a new study shows that the majority of Americans continue to support hunting.

The scientific telephone survey of American adults 18 and older was conducted in early September and commissioned by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry.

Three-fourths of survey respondents (74 percent) said they approved of hunting, a level of support that has not varied by more than a few percentage points since 1995. “The numbers have been consistent over the past two decades,” said Mark Damian Duda, executive director of Responsive Management, the research firm that conducted the study. “Support for hunting is solid.”

The new study went a step further than previous research, however, revealing extraordinary support for the “right to hunt.” No matter what their opinion about hunting, Americans stand firmly behind a person’s right to hunt, with 94 percent agreeing it is “OK for other people to hunt if they do so legally and in accordance with hunting laws and regulations.” Only four percent of respondents wanted to strip citizens of the right to hunt.

“It’s gratifying to see that strong public support for our great tradition of hunting is unwavering,” said Steve Sanetti, NSSF president and CEO. “For many of us, it is extremely fulfilling to provide food for ourselves and our families through hunting, even if only on a few days a year. That’s one of many reasons why NSSF and others work so diligently to protect hunting.”

Action needed on H.R. 822, National Right-To-Carry bill

H.R. 822, the National Right to Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011 would make concealed handgun licenses valid in in all states that allow concealed carry, similar to how your drivers license works. Bill sponsor Clifford Stearns (R-FL) has been building support for his bill and now it’s time for some grassroots involvement.

H.R. 822 currently has 244 co-sponsors, including 210 Republicans and 34 Democrats. Has your Congressman co-sponsored this legislation?

If your Congressman has not co-sponsored H.R. 822, contact their office and request that they sign on. We need more co-sponsors to show support and help bring this important legislation up for a vote.

If your Congressman has already co-sponsored H.R. 822, contact their office and thank them for their support. Also ask that they continue to encourage their fellow law makers to join the effort and to let leadership know they want to vote on this legislation before the end of the year.

National Hunting and Fishing Day is tomorrow!

National Hunting and Fishing Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the conservation efforts of outdoorsman across the nation.

Always the fourth Saturday in September, NHF Day 2011 will be Sept. 24.

Help us celebrate this special annual “holiday” established by Congress (in 1972) to recognize hunters, anglers and recreational shooters for their leadership and contributions to conservation in America. Through dues and contributions to conservation organizations, hunters give an additional $280 million annually for wildlife and habitat.

Nobody does more for fish, wildlife and habitat than traditional sportsmen and women. Communicating this message is a daily goal for all of us at Wonders of Wildlife museum—the official home of NHF Day—in Springfield, Mo.

National Hunting and Fishing Day is one of the easiest ways to recognize the conservation efforts of hunters and fishermen across the nation. It is also a great way to get youth involved in our great heritage.

Central State University Pre-Law School Day – HB256 Guns on college campus debate

Governor Kasich signs Ohio Restaurant Carry Bill

The Third Annual Central State University Constitution/Pre-Law Day was held Sept 15 at the College of Education and Natural Sciences. It was quite an eventful day. The activities included various law colleges on hand to speak with the pre-law program students regarding their programs. The next activity was very important to the pre-law program at CSU as agreements were signed with four additional law schools. This provides the students more opportunity to enter law school following graduation from CSU. The final phase was the debate on HB256 (Rep. John Adams) which will allow concealed carry on college campuses and also allow concealed carry without a license for persons not otherwise prohibited.

I represented the affirmative side while the opposition side was taken by State Representative Clayton Luckie (D-Dayton). Rep. Luckie has a 100% anti-gun voting record during his service in the Ohio House.
