CCW Permit Holders Have Better Carriage Protocol Than One Federal Law Enforcement Agency

On November 1, 2011, Marcus Flagg, President of Federal Flight Deck Officers Association (FFDOA) testified before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs committee, Chaired by Senator Joeseph Lieberman (D-CT). Mr. Flagg did an excellent job addressing problems with the TSA in general and the FFDO program in particular, as well as explaining the importance of a multi-layer security plan and how layers should complement each other.

Federal Flight Deck Officers (FFDO’s) are pilots who are federally trained and deputized Law Enforcement Officers. They are the fourth largest Federal Law Enforcement Agency, quietly and professionally doing their job as pilots while providing a critical layer of security.

The following points highlight the patriotism of the pilots who volunteer to serve their Country.

Ohio’s restaurant & car carry law in effect for two months, but where is the carnage?

It has been two months since concealed carry in restaurants became law in Ohio and onerous car carry rules were removed. Once again the anti-gun editorial boards and fear mongers were wrong. Carrying a “hidden gun,” as the “guns in bars” -types like to call it, is proving to be no more dangerous than the “hidden” car keys carried by the same person in the same establishment.

It was a long hard fight for such a common sense law, but it was worth it. In the first month of the new law I left my gun in my car in more secure locations than my glove box, which is probably the first place a criminal would look for something valuable. On a long drive I moved the holstered gun off my person and wedged the holster between my front seats. While the improvement in comfort justifies the move in its own right, there are also tactical advantages. The seat-belt was no longer an issue for drawing the gun. And as we move into winter when jackets become normal wear, that is another layer that must be cleared to deploy a gun from a car. Holstered on your person is great much of the time, but not always.

Shooting for a Championship – The OSU Rifle Team

There is a strong tradition of excellence at The Ohio State University. The dedication, competitive spirit and success of the OSU NCAA rifle team exemplifies all that is OSU. The team kicked off the season with a luncheon and a special match pitting alumni against the current team. This was the warm up before launching into the highly competitive NCAA season. It’s a long season that runs through March 2012. The conclusion of the season will be very special as OSU will be the host facility for the NCAA rifle championships. The school will also be hosting the 2013 NCAA championships.

the Civilian Marksmanship Program, the NRA and USA Shooting Team. She previously finished
14th out of 90 shooters in smallbore rifle at 2009 Junior Olympic National Championship. She
recently placed fifth in air rifle with a 583 against Kentucky and Murray State.

Team coach Pat Cherry noted, “2001 was the last time OSU hosted the NCAA rifle championships. Since that time the introduction of electronic targets and scoring has become widely used and is the standard for the NCAA championships. OSU is blessed to have the support of key donors who made very generous donations to renovate our range facilities.”

Coach Cherry, who has coached the Buckeye Rifle Team since 1988, is a recognized leader in marksmanship training and a whole lot more. His interest in competitive rifle shooting dates to his service in the US Army. He was a member of the Fulda Germany Rod and Gun Club and the competitive rifle team of the Aviation Co., 14th Cavalry, 7th Army. He has coached the Pickaway County Junior Rifle Club from 1972 until 1988. Coach Cherry served as president of The Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association from 1984-86 and as director of junior shooting programs from 1981-88. He has been a member of the National Rifle Association Shooting Coach Development Staff and a NRA Training Counselor. Coach Cherry has been recognized for his work on environmental projects focusing on water quality. He received the Water Conservationist of the Year Award from the League of Ohio Sportsmen and the Ohio Wildlife Federation. He also has been recognized by the Ohio House of Representatives for work in water conservation.

White-tailed Deer Hunters Challenged by Weather

COLUMBUS, OH – Hunters took 23,600 white-tailed deer on a rain-soaked Monday, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The deer-gun season remains open through Sunday, December 4 then reopens for two days on Saturday and Sunday, December 17-18.

The preliminary figures show a decrease of 39 percent from last year’s opening day total of 39,071.

“Last year’s opening day harvest was exceptionally high. Even with ideal weather conditions, I’m sure this year’s harvest would have fallen short of the 2010 season simply because last year was an atypical season,” said Mike Tonkovich, ODNR, Division of Wildlife deer project leader. He noted that the weather conditions on opening day in 2007 were so poor that the harvest was down an unprecedented 51%.

Tonkovich said that bow hunting continues to grow in popularity and has had an impact on the gun season harvest. Ohio has one of the most liberal bow-hunting seasons in the country, which allows hunters to take advantage of the good weather earlier in the fall.

Counties reporting the highest numbers of deer checked on Monday included: Coshocton-1,197, Muskingun-964, Tuscarawas-896, Harrison-882, Guernsey-816, Knox-719, Belmont-629, Carroll-620, Holmes-617, and Licking-616.

No Hiding the Wide Receiver Now: ATF gun-running scandal #2

A major news feature written by Bloomberg/Businessweek Assistant Managing Editor Paul M. Barrett will likely make it difficult, if not impossible, for the administration to continue to defend Operation Fast and Furious as a one-time bad idea.

Barrett’s story “The Guns That Got Away” tells the story of Operation Wide Receiver, a 2006 Tucson, Arizona based ATF operation.

Begun under the Bush administration, Operation Wide Receiver preceded Fast and Furious. Like Fast and Furious, sales to known arms traffickers were made under the guidance – and encouragement – of the ATF. It was equally unsuccessful, but no US agents have been killed with the 450 rifles and handguns that were sold to traffickers supplying guns to Mexican criminals.

For the past few months, I’ve written peripherally about Operation Wide Receiver, but haven’t named a source, other than saying it was unimpeachable.

The man who tipped the ATF to the firearms smuggling, then personally made the sales to the suspected firearms traffickers, sometimes from his own home, may be a name many of you recognize.
