Ohio and New Mexico Sign Concealed Carry Reciprocity Agreement

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and New Mexico Department of Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Gorden E. Eden, Jr. have signed an agreement that permits reciprocity between their states for citizens who have valid concealed carry permits.

“I am pleased that this agreement between Ohio and New Mexico will allow Ohioans who have concealed carry permits the same rights to carry a concealed handgun in the State of New Mexico, as well as New Mexicans who have concealed carry permits to do the same in Ohio,” said Attorney General DeWine.

Secretary Eden reiterated those remarks. “As proponents of the Second Amendment, the New Mexico Department of Public Safety is happy to extend concealed carry rights to licensed Ohioans, as those same rights are extended to licensed New Mexicans who visit Ohio.”

Ohio law permits the Attorney General to enter into written agreements with other states whose laws are “substantially comparable” to Ohio’s eligibility requirements for a license to carry a concealed handgun. In New Mexico, this authority falls under the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.

This is the time of year when many make charitable contributions. Tax deductible is good, but I’ve got a much better deal for you.

If you pay Ohio income tax this year, you are entitled to a $100 per couple ($50 per person) tax credit for donations to certain politicians. A credit is much different than a deduction. You don’t get a part of your donation back, you get the whole donation back as a tax refund.

If you do nothing, the tax-and-spenders in both parties will have no problem spending your tax dollars. But wouldn’t you rather take some of that money and divert it to a pro-gun candidate? Help the people you want to help change the law. It costs you nothing!

Attorney General’s “Violent Crime with Guns Advisory Group” meets again; DeWine’s goal is to “deep six” violent offenders

The Ohio News Network is reporting that the office of Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine held another meeting of the Violent Crime with Guns Advisory Group on Wednesday, December 7.

The group gathered at DeWine’s office to look at the statewide numbers and search for solutions.

Ohio State University professor Deanna Wilkinson and other members of the Violent Crimes with Guns Advisory Group met to discuss gun violence across the state, ONN’s Denise Alex reported.

…”It’s not going to be a one size fits all for every part of Ohio and you need to tailor the response to the problem,” Wilkinson said.

Wilkinson said that black males account for about 70% of gun violence.

“We know that they primarily are living in urban counties and have had more than four prior convictions,” Wilkinson said.

Attorney General Mike DeWine hopes studying the stats will result in taking action.

“You have to literally deep six the most violent people in your society and just separate them from the rest of us,” said DeWine. “That’s the only way we’re going to be safe.”

According to the article, the study found that of the top 11 Ohio counties with the most convictions, 25% came out of Cuyahoga County, 12% from Hamilton County and 10% from Franklin County.

Commander James Chura, Cleveland police department, is quoted as saying he would support legislation that would “get some advanced penalties for these guys and keep them locked up. The ones that are the violent offenders offend over and over again.”

Black Friday sales record plays a part

The November 2011 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,101,076 is an increase of 16.5 percent over the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 945,463 in November 2010. For comparison, the unadjusted November 2011 NICS figure of 1,527,454 reflects an 18.7 percent increase from the unadjusted NICS figure of 1,286,817 in November 2010.

This marks the eighteenth straight month that NSSF-adjusted NICS figures have increased when compared to the same period the previous year.

The adjusted NICS data were derived by NSSF research by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky, Iowa and Utah for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases.

Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide a more accurate picture of current market conditions. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions of firearms sales and transfers on new and used handguns and long guns.

CBS News is reporting that internal emails obtained by the news organization show that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) discussed using their covert operation “Fast and Furious” to argue for controversial new rules about gun sales.

In Fast and Furious, ATF secretly encouraged gun dealers to sell to suspected traffickers for Mexican drug cartels to go after the “big fish.” But ATF whistleblowers told CBS News and Congress it was a dangerous practice called “gunwalking,” and it put thousands of weapons on the street. Many were used in violent crimes in Mexico. Two were found at the murder scene of a U.S. Border Patrol agent.

ATF officials didn’t intend to publicly disclose their own role in letting Mexican cartels obtain the weapons, but emails show they discussed using the sales, including sales encouraged by ATF, to justify a new gun regulation called “Demand Letter 3”. That would require some U.S. gun shops to report the sale of multiple rifles or “long guns.” Demand Letter 3 was so named because it would be the third ATF program demanding gun dealers report tracing information.

On July 14, 2010 after ATF headquarters in Washington D.C. received an update on Fast and Furious, ATF Field Ops Assistant Director Mark Chait emailed Bill Newell, ATF’s Phoenix Special Agent in Charge of Fast and Furious:

“Bill – can you see if these guns were all purchased from the same (licensed gun dealer) and at one time. We are looking at anecdotal cases to support a demand letter on long gun multiple sales. Thanks.”

On Jan. 4, 2011, as ATF prepared a press conference to announce arrests in Fast and Furious, Newell saw it as “(A)nother time to address Multiple Sale on Long Guns issue.” And a day after the press conference, Chait emailed Newell: “Bill–well done yesterday… (I)n light of our request for Demand letter 3, this case could be a strong supporting factor if we can determine how many multiple sales of long guns occurred during the course of this case.”

Larry Keane, a spokesman for National Shooting Sports Foundation, a gun industry trade group, told CBS News the discussion of Fast and Furious to argue for Demand Letter 3 “disappointing and ironic.”

Hunting Is Safer Than Golf and Most Other Activities (Not to Mention Football, Basketball and Soccer)

NEWTOWN, Conn. — Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise: Hunting with firearms is safe; in fact, hunting with firearms is one of the safest recreational activities in America.

With hunting season in full swing across the country, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry, has compiled data that shows hunting ranks third in safety when compared to 28 other recreational pursuits, ranging from baseball to wrestling. Hunting with firearms has an injury rate of 0.05 percent, which equates to about 1 injury per 2,000 participants, a safety level bettered only by camping (.01 percent) and billiards (.02 percent). For comparison, golf has an injury rate of 0.16 percent (1 injury per 622 participants), while tackle football topped the list of activities with an injury rate of 5.27 percent (1 injury per 19 participants).

“Many people have the misconception that hunting is unsafe, but the data tells a different story,” said Jim Curcuruto, NSSF’s director of industry research and analysis. “Comprehensive hunter education classes that emphasize the basic rules of firearm safety and a culture of hunters helping fellow hunters practice safe firearms handling in the field are responsible for this good record.”

Hearing for Canton police officer who threatened to execute concealed carry licensee postponed again

Officer Daniel Harless is still receiving paid time off, even after running out of sick days

The Canton Repository reported recently that a hearing for Officer Daniel Harless, the Canton police officer who was caught on dash cam video berating an Ohio concealed handgun license-holder and threatening to execute him, has been postponed yet again.

The article also reveals that Harless continues to receive sick pay, even though he is out of paid time off, thanks to a special clause in his union contract.

Coshocton County Leads 2011 Ohio Deer-Gun Harvest

Hunters still have a weekend of deer-gun hunting, December 17-18

COLUMBUS, OH- Ohio hunters took 90,282 white-tailed deer during the state’s popular, week-long deer-gun season, which ran November 28 through December 4, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. In 2010, hunters checked a total of 105,034 deer during the same time period.

“Hunters clearly took advantage of the weather as the week progressed. They trimmed the deficit from last season from 39% on opening day, to 14% by the close of the season on Sunday,” said Mike Tonkovich, ODNR, Division of Wildlife deer project leader. “While other factors may have been at work, it is clear that extreme weather – good or bad – on key harvest days can have a significant impact on the bottom line.”

Counties reporting the highest numbers of deer brought to Ohio check stations last week included Coshocton – 3,690, Muskingum – 3,223, Tuscarawas – 3,180,Guernsey – 2,982, Harrison – 2,772, Licking – 2,678, Knox – 2,480, Belmont – 2,431, Carroll – 2,252, and Washington – 2,225.

The death of common sense: Now even a purse decorated with the small image of a gun can get you in trouble with the TSA

A Jacksonville, FL television station is reporting that the Transportation Security Administration stopped a 17 year-old girl at the security gate and caused her to miss her flight because the design of her purse contained the small shape of a revolver molded in plastic.

From the article:

“It’s my style, it’s camouflage, it has an old western gun on it,” [Vanessa] Gibbs said.

But her preference for the pistol style didn’t sit well with TSA agents at the Norfolk airport.

Gibbs said she was headed back home to Jacksonville from a holiday trip when an agent flagged her purse as a security risk.

“She was like, ‘This is a federal offense because it’s in the shape of a gun,'” Gibbs said. “I’m like, ‘But it’s a design on a purse. How is it a federal offense?'”

After agents figured out the gun was a fake, Gibbs said, TSA told her to check the bag or turn it over.

By the time security wrapped up the inspection, the pregnant teen missed her flight, and Southwest Airlines sent her to Orlando instead, worrying her mother, who was already waiting for her to arrive at JIA.

Tami Gibbs, the teen’s mom, was quoted as saying. “Oh, it’s terrifying. I was so upset. I was on the phone all the way to Orlando trying to figure out what was going on with her. It was terrifying. I don’t ever want to go through it again.”
