Op-Ed: Sikh temple shooting will disappoint gun prohibitionists
by Dave Workman
As the history of slain gunman Wade Michael Page continues to surface in the wake of the Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin, the Associated Press and Seattle Times are reporting some facts that will not help gun control proponents.
They are having quite a chat about this on the Seattle Times reader feedback site.
When he was living in North Carolina, Page reportedly obtained five pistol purchase permits in 2008 from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department. This is something gun control advocates would like to see nationwide, short of a ban on private handgun ownership. Citizens would need to get permission from the police before buying a handgun.
Wade reportedly did not have a concealed carry permit. So much for any attempt to link this guy to the millions of law-abiding citizens, including more than 371,000 here in Washington, who are licensed to carry.
He used a pistol, not a so-called “assault rifle” that can be easily demonized. The murder weapon has so far been described as a 9mm pistol. Wade is said to have changed magazines several times, which demolishes any argument for banning so-called “high capacity assault magazines” as a preventive measure against such crimes.
Romney chooses strong Second Amendment advocate and avid hunter as running mate
by Chad D. Baus
For gun owners who have been less than enthused to have another “so-so” Republican nominee to face the vehemently anti-gun Barack Obama, Mitt Romney’s choice of Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate is sure to lift their spirits.
Much like Gov. Sarah Palin in 2008, Ryan brings a strong understanding of Second Amendment rights and hunter’s issues to the ticket.
Ryan has been both A-rated and endorsed by the NRA-PVF since at least 2002 (the archives aren’t available farther back).
Gun Owners of America also gives Ryan an A.
According to OnTheIssues.org, Ryan’s voting record is stellar.
- Voted YES on prohibiting product misuse lawsuits on gun manufacturers. (Oct 2005)
- Voted YES on prohibiting suing gunmakers & sellers for gun misuse. (Apr 2003)
- Voted YES on decreasing gun waiting period from 3 days to 1. (Jun 1999)
- Rated A by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun rights voting record. (Dec 2003)
- National cross-state standard for concealed carry. (Jan 2009)
- Ban gun registration & trigger lock law in Washington DC. (Mar 2007)
- Allow reloading spent military small arms ammunition. (Apr 2009)
Ryan is a co-sponsor of both the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act (HR822), and the Collectible Firearms Protection Act (HR615), which seeks to allow M-1 Garands and M-1 Carbines to be repatriated without State Department approval (i.e. Ryan wants to reverse the Obama administration’s ban on the importation of these historic collectibles).
Ryan is a bow-hunter, and a rifle and shotgun owner, and as the old adage goes, pictures say a thousand words. One need look no further than images of his time afield to know that Paul Ryan is clearly one of us. This bow hunter doesn’t just put on blaze orange for photo ops, ala John Kerry.

Sheriff breaks up illegal Columbus-area CCW course certificate scheme
by Chad D. Baus
WCMH (NBC Columbus) is reporting that three people are facing charges, accused of helping falsify licenses to carry a concealed handgun.
From the article:
According to Franklin County Sheriff Zach Scott, an undercover investigation began in April 2012 into the issuance of fraudulent training certificates to obtain a CCW permit.
The sheriff’s office said that through the investigation, it was determined that three people were allegedly involved in the permit scheme.
It is alleged that 62-year-old John Michael Marshall, a certified firearm instructor, was selling his signed training certificates to 41-year-old Adam Chaykin and 48-year-old Ken Fouch, who were allegedly conducting illegal training classes, which fell far short from the required training.
Investigators said that in some cases, no training occurred.
The suspects are charged with complicity to falsification to obtain a CCW permit.
In June 2012, evidence was obtained from search warrants at the suspects’ homes.
According to the sheriff’s office, it is alleged that approximately 600 people may have obtained their concealed handgun licenses after being led to believe that their training was valid.

Pigs fly, it’s snowing in Hell, the world as we know it has ended, and the Cleveland Plain Dealer publishes a pro-gun op-ed
by Chad D. Baus
The Cleveland Plain Dealer has a long history of fighting against Ohioans’ right to keep and bear arms for self-defense, a right enumerated not just in the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment, but in our Ohio Constitution as well (Article 1, Section 4).
In the years prior to passage of Ohio’s concealed carry law, The Plain Dealer often utilized the editorial page, as well as the front page, to denigrate gun rights advocates’ efforts. When the law did pass, they announced “it is this newspaper’s intention to obtain this information and publish it. Our readers deserve to know the identities of those who obtain permits to carry their guns in public. We hope other news organizations will do the same in their communities.” The paper followed through with their threat, and at least one person on the list died in an ambush-style attack just days later. One columnist at the paper – the wife of current anti-gun U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown – even won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary that, among other things, bashed Ohio CHL-holders in 2004 as “Dirty Harry wannabe’s.”
With each and every attempt to pass improvements to the law, The Plain Dealer has been there in opposition. They have twice been caught mis-characterizing proposals contained in pro-gun legislation, and in 2005 Plain Dealer editorial page editor Brent Larkin even admitted to me that they don’t always read gun legislation before writing editorials opposing it.
So with that background in mind, I was stunned to read deputy editorial page editor Kevin O’Brien’s latest op-ed, “Left’s reaction to Colorado shooting reprises the same, old misplaced fears.”
